Paris-Nice: Stage 2

Dylan Groenewegen beat the wind, echelons, crashes and his rivals to snatch his second stage win in succession in Paris-Nice and strengthen his leader’s yellow jersey in Bellegarde. The Dutchman managed to stay in the last group of seven riders left to battle it out for victory after a fast and hard stage that gradually depleted the peloton to overpower Spain’s Ivan Garcia and Belgium Philippe Gilbert on the line. The day, swept by crosswinds, was merciless for France’s Warren Barguil and Spain’s Gorka Izagirre, third a year ago, both forced out of the race after a crash.

158 riders started from Les Breviaires at 12:51. The presence of Cote de Senlisse (3rd cat.) at km 26.5 spurred KOM leader Damien Gaudin into action and the Frenchman attacked from the flag, followed by Nicolas Edet (Cofidis) and Alessandro de Marchi (CCC). The trio built a lead of over a minute until the climb, on which Gaudin collected four more point to strengthen his polka-dot jersey. Soon after the climb, the peloton split in several echelons.

The scattered peloton bridged the gap with the escapees as race leader Groenewegen remained safely in the first part of the pack. The trio were reeled in at kilometer 36.5 as the peloton gradually regrouped. The second climb saw Florian Senechal (Deceuninck-Quick Step) take the four points. Shortly afterwards (Km 58) the pack split again in several echelons as a crash involved Gorka Izagirre (Astana), Warren Barguil (Areka Samsic) and Tao Goeghegan Hart, among others. Barguil and Izagirre were unable to make it back on their bikes and called it quits.

Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) and Bob Jungels (Deceuninck-Quick Step) were among the riders trapped in one of the dropped echelons. At the first intermediate sprint in Mereville, Michal Kwiatkowski (Sky) made his ambitions clear by picking three points ahead of Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) and Rudy Molard (Groupama-FDJ). The peloton kept splitting into dozens of echelons with riders scattered all over the windswept stretches of flat land. While Jungels made it back near the front, it was not the case of Simon Yates, drifting at the back. At km 108, Groenewegen and green jersey holder Fabio Jakobsen were also dropped from the front but the yellow jersey made it back 10 km further down the road with the help of four team-mates.

24 in the lead
In the last 40 km, a group of 23 riders emerged, including Quintana (Movistar), Roelandts (Movistar), Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott), Maes (Lotto-Soudal), Garcia (Bahrain-Merida), Grossschartner (Bora-Hansgrohe), Bardet, Gallopin, Naesen, Vandenbergh (AG2R), Bernal, Rowe (Sky), Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo), Demare, Molard (Groupama-FDJ), Gilbert, Jungels(Deceuninck-Quick Step), Kittel (Katusha), Greipel (Arkea), Groenewegen, Jansen, Wynants, Kelderman (Jumbo-Visma), Heisel (Dimension Data). Kwiatkowski was dropped after a mechanical while Rigoberto Uran (Education First) crashed.

On the first passage on the line, local favorite Tony Gallopin took the second intermediate sprint ahead of leader Romain Bardet as the front group still led by one minute. In the final circuit around Bellegarde, the Kwiatkowski group slowly bridged the gap and the junction took place 10 km from the line. With 3 km to go, another split took place and Trentin, Sanchez, Garcia, Rowe, Bernal, Kwiatkowski, Gilbert, and Groenewegen found themselves in the lead to battle it out for the stage win. In the last stretch, Groenewegen was logically too strong for his rivals and comfortably collected his second stage win in succession to strengthen his yellow jersey

Reactions

Dylan Groenewegen: “Today was a very tough stage because of the crosswinds. There was a continuous fight for positions and a continuous racing at the limit. It was far from easy. The team did a perfect job and after the last corner they put me in an ideal position. I am very proud of my success and especially proud of how we rode as a team”, the stage winner said. “It was difficult at times, but my teammates got me through it. In the end, we remained with seven leaders. It was mainly a matter of waiting and to not start the sprint too early. When Trentin accelerated, I started my sprint and I was able to finish it off. Two stages, two victories. I am very happy. Tomorrow there is another flat stage and then we will try again. It will be a tough day again due to the wind but we are going for it again.”

Romain Bardet: “It was a good day for the team but also one of the three hardest days I spent on a bike. When I saw Jungels get dropped in the last 3 km I told myself if he goes there is no reason why I should stay up there. Sometimes just a brake at the wrong time of a couple of places in the bunch make all the difference in the world. But when you have guys like Oliver Naesen or Stijn Vandenbergh with you, guys who win classics in their own right, it make things much easier. I owe them a lot today.”

Egan Bernal: “It was a nice stage, but also a really hard one. It was windy all day and it was quite stressful in the lead group too. We started with Ivan [Sosa], Sebastian [Henao], Tao [Geoghegan Hart] and Jhonatan [Narvaez] and they put us in the front from kilometre zero, which was good. With Kwiato and Luke it is easy to be in the front as the peloton has a lot of respect for them, so it easy for me to follow them and in the final it was good. When you just have to follow it is earlier. They told me all day, ‘left, right, over here, stay focused here, we need to move over to the right or the front’. When you have people telling you what you need to do it is much easier!”

Matteo Trentin: “If you aren’t sitting in the front row with the wind in your face then you always have the possibility to get dropped. If you analyse the whole race it was always the same 20 guys sitting in the front group. I was less stressed than yesterday because it split straight away. When you make the split, you are at the front, then you know how to ride and it is more like stress for yourself to be in the group but it was not as much stress as yesterday to keep the position.

“We had Jack Haig up there and he did good to come back, of course it is a pity for the general classification for Simon but it can be like that with the wind. We still have Jack in contention so it is not completely over for the GC. There’s still some sprint days arriving, Groenewegen looks like he is in super form but I am watch more stages with little more climbs where I can maybe be a little better in the finish than them.”

John Degenkolb “Today I had the legs, but I was [forced] in the gravel on the left side, and then once you’re in the gravel you cannot comeback. It’s too bad because if you win a stage like this, it gives you a lot of confidence.”

Luis Leon Sanchez “A very difficult day, stressful in every minute of racing. There was no time to drink or to eat! After the peloton split in echelons, I was able to move in the leading group, taking some bonus seconds on the intermediate sprint. But, later, I’ve got a flat tire and had to stop to change my rear wheel. When I came back on the bike I found myself in the third group. We did a good job all together to catch a group in front of us and later we chased really hard to catch the leaders. Hugo Houle was with me and he did absolutely enormous work, helping me in that chase. Finally, with 10 km to go we managed to come in front. Honestly, in that moment I was empty, but anyway, till the finish line I did my best to finish with the leaders. I am really sorry for Gorka Izagirre, who crashed earlier in the stage, but hope, he is ok and will avoid serious injuries”.
