Paris-Nice: Stage 3

Ireland’s Sam Bennett surged forward with 200m to go to snatch his second stage win in Paris-Nice after the first one two years ago in Chalons-sur-Saone. The Bora-Hansgrohe sprinter was the freshest of the field in the finale and he overpowered Australia’s Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal), who had to be content with his second runner-up spot in this edition while Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck Quick Step) was third. Britain’s Dan McLay was 4th.

Race leader Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma), winner of the first two stages, returned to the front too late to be a contender this time. The Dutchman still retained his overall leader’s yellow jersey with a six-second lead over Michal Kwiatkowski (Sky) and 11 seconds over Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana)

The start was given at 11:43 to 152 riders. A few kilometers after Cepoy, title-holder Marc Soler was involved in a crash which forced Domen Novak (Bahrian-Merida) out of the race. At the first sprint of the day in Chatillon-Coligny, Michal Kwiatkowski (Sky) collected three more bonus seconds ahead of Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) and Tony Gallopin (AG2R).

With strong headwind on the course, the pace was leisurely at 31.4 kph in the first hours. Eight riders – Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Tao Geoghegan Hart (Sky), Olivier Le Gac (Groupama-FDJ), Tim Declercq (Deceuninck-Quk Step), Reto Hollenstein (Katusha), Anthony Turgis (Direct Energie) , Kevin Reza (Vital Concept) and Ramunas Navardauskas (Delko Marseille Provence) made the first attempt at km 32 but were caught six kilometers later as Turgis was too dangerous in the GC.

Navardauskas kept going and was soon joined by team-mate Alessandro Fedeli. The pack gave them the go-ahead and the two earned a maximum lead of 5:35 at kilometer 49. The peloton, led by Jumbo-Visma and Lotto-Soudal riders, kept waiting patiently for the finale while slowly bridging the gap with the escapees (2:00 with 70 km to go). However moderate compared with stage 2, the pace was still too high for some exhausted riders like Fabio Aru (UAE), who was ill and called it quits. The bunch finally raised the tempo and reeled in the two Delko-Marseille-Provence riders with 38 km to go.

Six kilometers further down the course, as the road narrowed to lead to a bridge, a crash in the peloton halted a portion of the bunch. While nobody was injured, the pile-up forced riders like Soler, Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) or Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) to chase after the pack. But the peloton regrouped with 20 km to go, gearing up for the finale.

The second intermediate sprint of Bagneux (km 182) saw Kwiatkowki scavenge three more seconds ahead of Egan Bernal. The two Sky leaders somewhat took the sprinters off their guard in the last 3 km when they took the reins of the peloton and stretched the field. It took time for Groenewegen’s team-mates to bring him back in the sprint positions and the Dutchman — finally 9th in the stage — could not do anything when Bennett emerged with Ewan in his wheel.

REACTIONS
Sam Bennett:”I had really bad legs the last two days coming from the heat to the cold. But I knew the form was there. The legs were a lot better today and this was my last real sprint opportunity. The boys did a fantastic job in the last kilometer. They knew what they were doing. It was a great team effort today. It was actually a great job all day. I’m delighted. It’s nice to come back after I had to give up a year ago. I was sick last year but I decided to come all the same as this is Paris-Nice. There is strong competition here. I knew I had to compete with the best and I’m really proud with the job we did today.”

Dylan Groenewegen: “Today I didn’t have the legs and the punch to finish it off”, he said. “Yesterday’s stage has taken its toll. I had to give everything and I felt that in the final today. I really wanted to win today, the team did everything to make it happen, but I just didn’t have the power. I am happy that I have been able to win two stages already and that I can ride in the leader’s jersey for another day. Tomorrow’s stage will be tough. Perhaps a bit too tough for me, but we will see.”

Michal Kwiatkowski: “When there’s a chance to gain some time on GC by not expending too much energy, we are always up for it. There was plenty of chances to take bonus seconds in the sprints – there weren’t too many GC riders fighting for it. If you think about 14 seconds it’s a huge amount. Think about trying to be 14 seconds faster in a time trial, for instance, that could mean winning the whole GC.”

“I’m really thankful to the whole team that we really stayed out of trouble for these first three days. It was really hectic and having riders like Luke at your side takes a bit of pressure off your shoulders. It’s so much easier to ride in the bunch. I’m really happy to see Egan performing so well in the wind too. Sharing the leadership with him is amazing. We’re looking forward to the next few days because we came here looking to win this race.”

Matteo Trentin: “We didn’t actually sprint today, when Sky put it into the gutter I sprinted across to close the gap and then they just kept staying on the proper side of the road in the wind and then I hit some holes, all of them actually and then I dropped the wheel. Then from the back they were coming faster and I found myself in 40th position straight away.

“Luka was behind then he got across to me so he made the same mistake as me and when we got boxed the first time it was already too late, with all the teams organising and coming up. We got boxed in a couple of times on the run in but pretty much it was over from that point. I was so far behind I gained position and position into the last kilometre but it was impossible they were too fast in the front. Maybe if I didn’t jump across and just stayed there it would have been better but you never know before.

“We really needed people stopping in the front to come around so it was just not a day for us today, tomorrow is another day.”

Alexander Kristoff: “The final was complicated, the group was broken up in many small groups and Marcato and Bystrøm were great at taking me to the front.
At that point, the conditions were perfect to get a good result with a few sprinters, just Ewan, Démare and myself. But in the last kilometre, other cyclists came back and I had already used the energy needed to stay at the front. I couldn’t do better than seventh. I’m sorry to have lost that chance, I was going well and all was in place for a good result“.

Jakub Mareczko: “After two really crazy days of racing, it was nice to have a more straightforward stage today. The nerves really started to kick in when the breakaway was caught and even though the pace wasn’t too high, I think that’s why we saw the crash happen.”

“I was looked after really well by the guys today and in the final, I was sat in the wheel of Fran. In the crosswinds section, we were caught out but we stayed calm and worked together. Luckily, the race came back together with around two kilometers to go but going under the flamme rouge, the peloton was strung out in single file and I was just too far back.”

“I tried my best and I was able to make my way up to the front and into the action. I think I had the legs I needed today so, if I was in a better position when the sprint was launched, I think I would have finished higher up the rankings. It’s been a hard couple of days and a pity that I couldn’t do more but I can definitely learn and grow from this.”
