Team News: Madison Genesis Selected for Tour de Yorkshire
Madison Genesis’ participation in the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire has been confirmed, with the team set to compete against some of the world’s best teams and riders on May 2-5. The UCI 2.1-ranked event is the second biggest stage race in the British calendar and Madison Genesis are one of just seven domestic teams to be picked by organisers ASO.
Lining up against World Tour opposition – including Team Sky, Dimension Data and Katusha Alpecin – Madison Genesis will aim to continue a superb record, which has included several top-10 placings. The race takes on extra significance for British road race champion and Yorkshireman Connor Swift.
The 23-year-old from Thorne, Doncaster hopes to make his third Tour de Yorkshire appearance, this time resplendent in the red, white and blue bands of national champion. Home roads will also be motivation for three more Yorkshiremen to make the grade – including Tom Moses, Joey Walker and Joe Laverick. However, team manager Roger Hammond will face tough decisions when it comes to selection, with Ian Bibby, Matt Holmes, Erick Rowsell and Rich Handley all having finished in the top-10 of the race in previous editions.
Meanwhile, Mike Cuming wore the red jersey of best climber last year, highlighting the team’s strength in depth. With selection for the race confirmed, Hammond was naturally excited:
“Obviously we’re extremely pleased to be selected – to be acknowledged by ASO as one of the teams worthy of selection, we’re very appreciative of that. The Tour de Yorkshire for us is the biggest event in the UK. It gives us the exposure to racing against the biggest international riders and that’s what we really want to do; to experience the highest level of competition”.
“The legacy event of the 2014 Tour de France grand depart is now world renowned for producing excellent racing, in front of millions of passionate spectators who line the roads every year. With their participation assured, Madison Genesis begin their race programme with the Tour de Normandie”.
The squad will be confirmed in late April.
