News: Pedal Club Lunch
(by Chris Lovibond)

On March 21st, the Pedal Club lunch enjoyed the company of Dave Bonner as speaker. He entertained the club with a description of his career as a pro rider (1964-70) which included a struggle with the BCF when he wanted to revert to amateur status (from independent) because of contract difficulties – the BCF committee told him: ‘You can’t revert – you’re too good’ !

Although he had an excellent career as a roadman, some will be more impressed that in 1962 at the age of nineteen he cut a substantial 33 seconds off the national 25 competition record by recording 54.28.

This Pedal Club meeting was notable as the first under the chairmanship of its new president Peter King, a name which should perhaps be more familiar to VeloUK readers. Peter King is a relatively new member of the current British Cycling board (nominated by the English Regions in 2017).

Previously he has served as BC’s chief executive from 1999 to 2008, a period which saw a rise from chaos and near bankruptcy to rapid growth and record success at the 2008 Olympics. Aside from this proven efficiency in management, Peter is first and foremost a club cyclist who has competed in time trials and road races, and has acted as an official at every level of cycling organisation.

Answering questions from Pedal Club members who are concerned that BC’s corporate business approach could damage the existing culture of cycling clubs, it became clear that if anyone can succeed in protecting the heritage of club life, Peter is the best man for the job.
