trainSharp coached Tom Portsmouth joins the 500 watt Club, a massive improvement and incredibly impressive for a Junior
News: Tom Portsmouth’s 500 watt Challenge
trainSharp started to coach Tom Portsmouth under the Inspire Talent Programme at the end of 2016. Tom had big ambitions and wanted the help of a professional coaching team to help him achieve his goals and more, whilst also helping him to balance training and racing around school and exams.
As part of Tom’s testing day, we carried out a Maximal Aerobic Power (MAP) test. Via our SRM Power test equipment we calculated Tom’s MAP to be 407watts. This was very impressive for such young rider.
However, we knew there would be lots of hard training ahead to help Tom reach his 3-year goals.
Despite what you may hear, there is no single magic session to achieve your goal(s). Cycling fitness is multifaceted and develops year on year via consistency, commitment and variety within training. Some days will be tough, other days will be even tougher, but that is the beauty of the sport and it is a journey that many will go through.
We set a goal for Tom to achieve 500 watts in a MAP test by the end of 2019. An excellent winter and spring on and off the bike put Tom ahead of his targets. So, when Tom came in for another MAP test with us in May, we sensed he was very close to reaching the 500 watt target.
Tom recorded an average of 501 watts for his final minute. A massive improvement since we started to coach him and incredibly impressive for a Junior. Like many other riders, Tom has dreams of progressing through the sport to join riders such as Eddie Dunbar (who was developed through the trainSharp Inspire Talent Programme) in World Tour teams.
Our riders are backed up with years of coaching experience and a team of sport scientists to ensure we only measure and assess metrics that will make the rider faster.
