Event Press Release

The first ever Lancaster Grand Prix takes place on Sunday, with the race marking round 3 of the men’s National Road Series.

The peloton will depart Williamson Park at 9:30am, after which some of the country’s best domestic riders will do battle over the tough, hilly 100m route as they look to make headway in both the individual and team series standings.

The team standings have been dominated by one team thus far; Canyon DHB p/b Bloor Homes have won both previous rounds of the series, and the victors on those occasions – Rory Townsend and Tom Stewart – will both be lining up on Sunday. The individual standings are currently headed by Matthew Holmes (Madison Genesis), and he will be part of a strong Madison Genesis contingent, with the likes of Ian Bibby, Tom Moses and Joey Walker also on the start list.

Team Wiggins le Col will also be well-represented, with Gabz Cullaigh, Mark Christian and Rob Scott in their ranks, while Scott Thwaites – currently sixth in the individual series standings – will line up for Vitus Pro Cycling p/b Brother UK.

Kieran Savage (Cycling Sheffield Giant Sheffield) and Steve Lampier (Saint Piran) will also be looking to extend their impressive starts to the series.

The race will take in more than 2,600m (8,500 feet) of climbing. From Williamson Park, riders will travel to the well-known circuit based on the villages of Dolphinholme and Abbeystead, and will cover seven laps of this before returning – with a final tough climb of Conder Bottoms just 3km from the finish – to complete the race in Williamson Park at the foot of the Ashton Memorial.

From Madison Genesis
The Lancaster GP will see Jon Dibben (Madison Genesis) make his racing debut for Madison Genesis on Sunday 9 June. Dibben will be joined by Ian Bibby, Mike Cuming, Rich Handley, Johnny McEvoy, Tom Moses and Erick Rowsell. Matt Holmes will complete the eight-rider line-up and goes into the third round of the British Road Race Series with the overall lead, having placed fifth at the Klondike GP and fourth at the Lincoln GP.

The race marks a return to road competition for domestic teams, which last went head-to-head in mid-May in Lincoln. The Lancaster GP also serves as the sixth of fourteen qualifying events for the 2019 Tour of Britain. The race will cover 160.9 kilometres of grippy, exposed and undulating roads around the Forest of Bowland and has been described by organisers as a British version of an Ardennes classic. With over 9000ft of climbing, it is very comparable to the Klondike GP.

Departing Lancaster at 9.30am on Sunday 9 June, the peloton of over 100 riders will travel 11km south toward Dolphinholme, where they will start seven laps of an 18.5km circuit. Each lap starts with a climb of three kilometres that the riders will negotiate in around five minutes.

From here, the counter-clockwise circuit makes an undulating descent on a mix of open moorland and small country lanes. The final 18.5km run-in to the finish covers a fairly mundane climb and descent, before hitting what could be the race-deciding Little Fell Lane climb.

The 8% average gradient, kilometre-long ascent comes at the perfect time to launch a late attack and with a short descent to the finish line there’s little chance for dropped riders to come back to the front. Fans can follow the race with live updates on Twitter, with highlights on Eurosport to be aired next week.
