Stage 6: TDF

Two Tour de France debutants found glory at La Planche des Belles Filles.

After winning stage 2 of the Critérium du Dauphiné at Craponne-sur-Arzon, Dylan Teuns took his maiden Tour de France victory on his debut in the race while his last breakaway companion, Italy’s Giulio Ciccone, who carries the same family name as singer Madonna but is not related to her although they both originate from Abbruzzo, took the yellow jersey.

175 riders took the start of stage 6 in Mulhouse. One non-starter: Patrick Bevin (CCC), due to fractured ribs on stage 4. After 4km, 14 riders formed a breakaway group: Benoît Cosnefroy (AG2R-La Mondiale), Dylan Teuns (Bahrain-Merida), Serge Pauwels (CCC), Julien Bernard and Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo), Nikias Arndt (Sunweb), Natnael Berhane (Cofidis), Thomas De Gendt and Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal), Fabien Grellier (Total Direct Energie), Nils Politt (Katusha-Alpecin), Xandro Meurisse and Andrea Pasqualon (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and André Greipel (Arkéa-Samsic).

Their advantage was already 6’40’’ at the intermediate sprint of Linthal (km 29) won by Pasqualon while Michael Matthews (Sunweb) outsprinted Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) for the remaining point on offer. At the top of the first category 1 climb of the 2019 Tour de France, the Markstein, Wellens found a new rival for the King of the Mountains competition as Ciccone hinted that he’s interesting in doubling up.

A maximum time gap was reached at the bottom of the Ballon d’Alsace, km 94: 8’30’’. It was down to 7’20’’ at the top, after which GC teams showed up at the head of the peloton to relay Deceuninck-Quick Step in the chase: Ineos and Bahrain-Merida in second lane before Movistar decided to up the tempo of the bunch within 50km to go. At col des Croix 37km before the end, De Gendt went for two KOM points and forged on so he became the lone leader. He got caught 1km before the col des Chevrères by Teuns, Ciccone, Pauwels and Wellens while world champion Alejandro Valverde made the race hard at the front of the peloton. With 10km to go, the leading quartet still had 4’ over the peloton.

Warren Barguil (Arkéa-Samsic) was the first man to attack from the peloton before Mikel Landa (Movistar) who was eventually reeled in because of a late acceleration by Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step) who tried to retain the yellow jersey but missed out by six seconds. Ciccone took over as the leader of the Tour de France but lost the stage victory to Teuns at Super Planche, the steep part above the usual finish. It’s the first stage win for Bahrain-Merida at the Tour de France [in their third participation]. The last Italian in the yellow jersey was Fabio Aru two years ago. Geraint Thomas (Ineos) and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) were the first of the favourites while Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo-Visma), Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) and Romain Bardet (AG2R-La Mondiale) lost contact with the main group.

REACTIONS

Dylan Teuns: Today was a good opportunity for a break so I was looking for a good chance and finally a group of 14 riders formed. It was a nice group and we worked well together.Once we saw the gap was growing, everybody started to believe that we could make it to the finish”.

In fact, Dylan Teuns managed to stay away with the only Giulio Ciccone resisting until the final few hundred meters:“I know that Ciccone is a very strong rider, he won a stage at the last Giro and it seemed to me the same situation as last year at the Vuelta, when I lost the victory with Woods and I knew I couldn’t make the same mistake today. So I had to stay calm and just waiting for the right moment. I tried a couple of times in the last five hundred meters and finally the third time I succeeded. I saw that had a little gap and I just kept pushing to the finish line”.

Dylan Teuns – who this season won also a Critérium du Dauphiné stage, wearing the yellow jersey for two days – had never won a Grand Tour stage: “It’s unbelievable and winning here at the Tour de France is a dream come true”.

Giulio Ciccone (Trek Segafredo): “In my head I was always thinking of the stage today, I never thought I would take the yellow jersey. But now I have finished second in the stage and have the yellow and I am very happy. Today with the stage I also start my operation for the mountains jersey, but it’s very hard here as many riders try for this. We will see – today was the first hard stage and we have a lot more coming, but we try for sure.”

“To get the yellow is unbelievable, this feeling is crazy. I am 24 years old and I am here for the experience and now I have the yellow jersey. Honestly, in the last climb I was only thinking about the stage especially when I saw the time and we only had two minutes. That last 100 meters was super hard. I was disappointed to finish second, but now that I have the yellow jersey, it is better.”

“Tomorrow is flat, and we can try and keep the jersey, but after it is all for Richie (Porte) who is super strong, so we will work for him. This year for me has been fantastic, the Giro already was big and now I am here after six stages and have the yellow jersey. It’s unbelievable.”

Geraint Thomas: “I felt pretty good. I thought it would be a more solid day – it’s never easy, but it was steady for the first three climbs. When Movistar went and Valverde was riding it was solid, I was feeling pretty good – I was just unsure as on those steep climbs I was expecting Richie Porte, Nairo Quintana and obviously Egan to jump up there, so I was hoping for it to be hard all day before that. But it was a good day in the end.

“It’s one of those climbs where you really have to be patient and when Alaphilippe went pretty early, at like 800m to go, I just had to have the confidence to let him go and ride my own tempo and try and ride it all the way to the line. I was starting to blow though as it was solid, overall it was a decent day.”

Michal Kwiatkowski: “It was super tough to pull on the front on the final climb, considering how Movistar were riding on the second last climb, and on the last one as well. When you have riders like Alejandro Valverde pulling on the front, it’s proof that it’s not an easy day. When Landa attacked I was trying to maintain the gap.

“Obviously I was just riding my last few kilometres easy and I could see on the television that G was doing really well, Egan as well on such as steep gradient, fighting against Alaphilippe is not an easy thing so it shows G’s in really good form which is the most important thing.

“I’m really happy that G and Egan finished well, as it wasn’t an easy day for most of us, one of the hardest stages of this year’s Tour de France and the first GC checkpoint which we’ve come through so I’m so happy.”

Luke Rowe: “It was almost an easier day than we expected because the way the break went. We were expecting it to attack for a long time so we dodged a bullet in that sense. I think the team rode really well. It’s one of them standard Tour de France days where it’s on all day.

“When Movistar started ramping up towards the end it started to explode. The legs felt really good and I did what I had to do. To hear what G’s gone and done there – we knew he could do it, we knew we had a good chance to be in a position to try and repeat what we did last year. Egan was also right there in the mix. It was a great day for us.”

Tim Wellens: “Yesterday I really thought I needed to take a day off before I’d go in the breakaway again but this morning my legs felt much better. It didn’t take many efforts to get into the breakaway today. Sometimes it takes an hour. Everybody at the front understood that we had a chance to contest the stage victory. I was lucky that Thomas [De Gendt] was with me at the front, so he helped me making the [KOM] points. He deserved the combativity prize so I think I’ll give him my trophy. His attack helped me a lot. I was in the wheels defending his attack so the other riders had to ride flat out. I hope to retain the polka dot jersey for a few more days. I’ll fight for it as long as possible.”

Nairo Quintana: “We did a nice job as a team and we sort of fulfilled our goal, which was also not losing time. These finishes are quite hard for us. We’re pure climbers, yet this climb is really steep and more suited to other kind of finishers. The first mountain stage is always difficult to tackle, you need your legs to adapt themselves to the new pace and gearing. Our rivals were still really fresh and that made it difficult to open any significant gaps. We’ll have to keep trying in the next few days.”

Mikel Landa: “It was the first mountain stage, I had good legs and wanted to confirm those feelings, see if our rivals would like to pick up the pace, too – yet in such a finish, with those tough final slopes, everyone is always keeping some energy for the end and it was also tough to open real gaps. The feeling after the stage is good: even if Thomas put a couple of seconds on us, I’m right where I wanted to be at this point of the race, and I think we can tackle the next mountain stages with good hopes.”

Jakob Fuglsang: In general, I think I think I can be quite happy about today. I was there until the final, I was maybe a little bit less good placed when Julian Alaphilippe went, but he attacked very strong and I was struggling a little bit on the gravel to get around some other riders. But apart from that, I tried to pace myself as good as possible, so I caught some of them back in the final meters. It was a super hard final and one that normally not suits me that good, so I was quite OK.

The goal was to stay in contention and not losing too much time, I lost some time on Geraint Thomas and Thibaut Pinot, but I’m quite satisfied. The day was not so difficult in the end as I thought, the feeling was better today so everything is going in the right way. Hopefully, the next time in the mountains I’m back at 100% and ready to challenge my opponents”

Adam Yates: “Today played out pretty much as expected, the pace was quite high all day, not just on the last climb, so all in all a tough day out. The guys looked after me as always and kept me in good position and out the wind so I could arrive in the final as fresh as possible.”

“In general, everything went ok, on the main paved section of the last climb I felt pretty good, but once we got on the gravel section, even though it was short it’s a bit different than normal and added an extra complexity to the day!”
