Results: Stockton Grand Prix

The World Class John Archibald (Ribble Pro Cycling) harnessed every ounce of sprinting stamina in the final 500 metres of the Stockton GP to stay clear of the chasers to storm to victory while Rebecca Durrell kept herself in the box seat of the national series at a spectacular Stockton Grand Prix with a sprint victory.

With the peloton sprinting flat out in the back ground, John Archibald (Ribble Pro Cycling) holds on to win his first Prem …

There was high drama in the seventh round of the men’s and sixth of the women’s National Road Series. Commonwealth Games medallist Archibald (Ribble Pro Cycling) was nigh on untouchable while Durrell (Brother UK – Tifosi p/b OnForm) stormed her way to victory to maintain her stranglehold on the top spot in the women’s standings.

In the men’s race, after an active start, it took time for a breakaway to stick whilst they raced out on the large circuit near Stockton on Tees. When the break did go, it was too big and then after the wheels were let go at one point, the breakaway shrunk in size and the frantic chase behind ceased.

The breakaway, with a lot of horsepower, wasn’t fast enough for Archibald so he went alone

For John Archibald, the pace in the break was not enough and he knew they would be caught so he went off on his own with 100k to go.

The peloton sat up for a long time but then bit by bit different teams took up the chase. Soon the breakaway group was swept up but still Archibald was clear on his own. The gap was coming down but would they catch him before the finish line. The answer was no as John did his best to sprint as fast as he could as the big bunch were reeling him in as the finish line approached and the Ribble Pro Cycling rider who won two medals in the RR and TT at the Road Nationals, held on, just, for a big victory.

In the big bunch high speed kick only seconds behind him, Matt Bostock (Canyon DHB) beat Tom Pidcock (Wiggins) to the line.

No catching Durrell
Meanwhile, Durrell’s triumph in the women’s race kept her the series’ leading light. Upstaged by Elizabeth Bennett (Campinense – Velo Performance) in Round Five – last week’s Curlew Cup in Stamfordham – Durrell hit back with a sprint victory in Stockton.

She moves 70 points clear of Bennett, who finished second in the north east, leapfrogging Leah Dixon into second on the leaderboard.

Durrell, who has been no stranger to the podium all season, winning the Chestnut Homes Lincoln Grand Prix and the first stage of the Alexandra Tour of the Reservoir, held her nerve in a sprint finish to cross the line first.

With the peloton bunched together for most of the action, Jessica Finney (Brother UK – Tifosi p/b OnForm), Jennifer Powell (Bianchi Dama), Amy Gornall (The Racing Chance Foundation), Phoebe Martin (RST/Cycle Division) and Hannah Farran (Team Boompods) all chanced their arm in a bid to streak clear – but they all failed to wrestle control of the race.

Ellen McDermott (Team Boompods) was one of the last to unsuccessfully attempt to break away but the final lap came down to a last-gasp contest of out-and-out speed, with Durrell powering her way to victory.
