Tour de France: Stellar Alaphilippe conquers Pau time trial

Julian Alaphilippe retained his amazing power to astonish and notched up a monumental individual time trial victory in Pau, which hosted a stage against the clock for just the third time in the history of the Grande Boucle, after 1939 and 1981.

“It’s incredible, I can’t tell you how happy I am! I knew I could do a good ride on this course, but I didn’t think I could win. The first part suited me and so I rode full gas, but I surprised myself in the second part. I pushed my limits and with the help of the public I gave everything until the line. I can’t believe it”, an over the moon Julian told the media after celebrating his 12th victory of the season with the team and strengthening his grip on the race lead.

Last rider down the ramp in Pau, one of the most visited towns in Tour de France history, Alaphilippe enjoyed a flying start and sailed across the first hilly section of the stage, setting the fastest result at the Cériset checkpoint. A man on a mission, the yellow jersey continued to blitz the tough and technical course and have best the reference time at the next two splits, arriving at the finish in a superb time of 35 minutes, which ensured not just another win, but also a ninth day at the top of the standings.

His second stage victory at this year’s Tour de France helped Julian extend his buffer in the GC to nearly one minute and a half ahead of Saturday’s stage to Tourmalet, one of the most iconic climbs in cycling. Despite this, the 27-year-old Deceuninck – Quick-Step rider – first Frenchman in almost two decades to triumph in a time trial at the Grande Boucle – although nothing short of effusive, reiterated that the general classification isn’t a goal for him.

“I am happy that I am still in yellow! Every day is a bonus and to wear this legendary jersey on its 100th birthday is fantastic! I knew the course and was focused on myself and on what I had to do today, while being supported by this superb crowds. I came very motivated to the start, but I never imagined that I could win here”, Julian explained at the press conference. “Now the plan is to take it day after day and see how things go. On Saturday we have a very hard summit finish on the Tourmalet and I will give it my all to stay in the main group for as long as possible, but I want to stress out that our GC rider remains Enric, who did a great time trial today, for which I congratulate him.”

Deceuninck – Quick-Step’s perfect day in Pau was rounded out by Tour de France debutants Kasper Asgreen and Enric Mas, both top 10 finishers in the stage on the back of a truly impressive ride against the clock. In addition to that, 24-year-old Enric moved up to fourth overall and into the prestigious yellow jersey, becoming the first Spaniard since 2007 to lead the best young rider standings.

“This result makes me very happy! It’s special to have the white jersey, which I will try to defend for as long as possible, and be up there in the general classification, but my objective hasn’t changed: I want to be in the top 10 in Paris. It’s just beautiful to have both yellow and white on the team and we hope to continue enjoying many more spectacular moments”, Mas said after Friday’s stage.

Wout van Aert: A big crash for Belgian time trial champion Wout van Aert. Van Aert was riding an excellent time trial and seemed on his way to a fast time, but in the final kilometres he crashed hard in a corner after having hit a barrier. He was taken to hospital by ambulance, as he was suffering from a deep flesh wound on his right upper leg. “He was operated on by the surgeon” says the team. “He stitched the capsule and skin and cleaned everything well. He has to stay in the hospital for a few days.”

OTHER REACTIONS

Geraint Thomas: “It wasn’t too bad it just felt like I was just overheating a bit so I was trying to deal with that. It’s not an excuse it’s the same for everyone. It was okay – just in that last bit I didn’t really feel it.  It was controlled, but in the last 8km or so I felt like when I really wanted to step on it I didn’t quite have that last five percent. It’s still a decent ride but you always pick it apart a bit. [Alaphilippe] is obviously going really well. He’s certainly the favourite and the one to watch at the minute. There’s a long way to go and a lot of hard stages to come now.”

Adam Yates “It was a tough TT. The first bit I was going pretty good and then I was losing five or 10-seconds here and there, so not my best TT but it is what it is. We’ll keep going, tomorrow is a tough day, a short one and then on Sunday it’s another tough one which I’ve actually reconned so I know that one.

Thomas de Gendt: “They told me I had the best time at the first intermediate point although I didn’t feel I was fully getting on speed yet. The intermediate time gave me confidence and I never slowed down. This TT of 27 kilometres is the same as doing a solo attack.”

Alejandro Valverde: “I’m happy, I think we all in the team did pretty much OK at the time trial. I didn’t really know the route – the first time I checked it out was at today’s recon. I didn’t do anything special before it, but I felt great. The important thing we must focus on about today, though, is that both Mikel and Nairo didn’t lose a lot of time, they did alright. Now it’s all about the mountains – we’ll see what we can do. Let’s hope we can turn things around in this week ahead. What do I expect from the Tourmalet? I expect to reach the top (laughs). Let’s see what our team staff has in mind and what we can do.”

Mikel Landa: “Seeing the gaps against those who finished just before me, it seems like a good sign about my TT. I felt OK. It was a very demanding route, and it’s also a good sign that I could go better and better over the course. Saturday’s stage is my favourite one – I’d pick it for a win if I could choose one, but surely there will be many people with the same intentions about winning at the Tourmalet. We didn’t have really warm temperatures so far in this year’s Tour, and that could change tomorrow – maybe our bodies react in an unexpected way. We’ll see how we do.”

Nairo Quintana: “My legs felt fine during the TT. Let’s hope it’s the same for the mountains, so we can perform well. We lost some time today, yet I felt OK. The final section was really flat, which meant the big rouleurs could push harder and gain more speed than us climbers. Now it’s time to attack – the mountains come, it’s our terrain.”

Steven Kruijswijk:  “After Wout’s crash I had to quickly change my focus. It is unfortunate that it happened. You don’t want it to happen to anyone”, Kruijswijk said. “I think I did a great time trial myself. The course was ideal for me and the feeling was pretty good. I knew that the first part suited me best with all those short, tough climbs. The last part was a lot less steep. It went very well until the second intermediate point. I expected to give in some time at the end. The time differences are still very small and I expect that the remainder of the Tour will be exciting. For now, I am third overall and doing well.”

Richie Porte: “It was a good ride, I think. We have done a lot of work on my time trial bike setup so it’s nice to get a good result. We can start the fight back now; we’ve given enough time away so it’s time to start taking some time back. “It will be everyone’s wish to win tomorrow on the Tourmalet, we’ll see what happens,” said Porte. “The GC is a bit more set and closer now. I think after a hard time trial like today you never know how the legs are going to be tomorrow, but look, I think everyone in the team is motivated to have a crack.”

Rigoberto Uran: “It was really important to do a really good time trial,” said Urán. “I’m not riding at my very best, but I’m happy with how I went and that we are continuing to move ahead. I always say that the Tour finishes in Paris. I know I lost time during the day when we had crosswinds, but we are here to fight until the finish.”

Jakob Fuglsang- “In the end, I hoped that I wouldn’t lose that much time, but on the other hand, I’m still happy with my performance and the feeling I had on the bike today. I did gain a bit of time on some GC contenders, so I think it’s still going in the right direction. I think I have to be satisfied with today. The power was good, so I can’t complain about my performance this time trial. Now I’m looking forward to the next days. Starting with tomorrow, which will be a special stage because it’s a short and intense stage right after today’s time trial. I think we’ll see that the Tour opens up tomorrow for the first time. I’m curious and I’m looking forward to it”.

Joey Rosskopf: “I’m really happy with my top ten. You wouldn’t believe how bad I was feeling this morning so to know that I can produce an effort like that gives me a lot of confidence. I definitely faded towards the end but I am happy with the result. Every day, we are fighting for the breakaway and sometimes I think do I actually want to be in the breakaway if I feel this bad, so it’s nice to know that I can flip the switch and dig deep. It gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the race.”

“It was a really hard time trial. The first half feels like the entire thing is uphill and then you come down and I don’t know if it was just me, or not, but it felt like a headwind so even on the part when you are hoping to go 60 kilometers per hour, you’re still kind of flailing a bit not going as fast as you hope for so it was really tough, the whole thing. I was just one second down at the third time check and you have to hope that you can overcome that but Asgreen is a bigger guy and has been on of the strongest guys in the race so far. I like to focus on the TT so I just had to do what I could today and we will see how it affects me over the days to come.”

“You couldn’t hide anything out there. The start was good. I did a pace at the start that would be good if I had had a really good day but I slowed down in the second half. I think you have to try though. If I was conservative at the start, I would be nowhere close but, by starting fast, I gave myself a chance. It’s always a mystery to me to see how the legs are going to react at this point in a Grand Tour.”
