Result: The Rising Phoenix RR

Perfect conditions of 25c and light breeze greeted riders in rural South Oxfordshire for the inaugural running of ‘The Rising Phoenix’ a 90 mile national B road race.

The first half of the race was dominated by a strong break of 7 riders including Tom Nightingale representing organising club Didcot Phoenix, with good cohesion in the front group the gap went out to 1:30 at one point, with Oliver Hucks of High Wycombe CC comfortably winning both Sprint Primes. As the race progressed and half the distance was completed, a more concerted chase was initiated from the bunch, with the break being reabsorbed into the now depleted main bunch with 30 miles still to race.

With two laps to race everything was back together and during the last two laps an eventual group of 10 got away and contested the top 10 placings with an advantage of approx 35 seconds on the main bunch. David Hewitt came out on top and was a convincing winner of the inaugural ‘Rising Phoenix’ road race and walked away with the majestic phoenix trophy.
