This Weekend: Ryedale Grand Prix

Ampleforth Abbey, North Yorkshire

Once again the best of the British Men’s and Women’s teams head to Ryedale and for this year, as with others in recent years, the organisers have again packed all of the action into a single day of racing featured in and around the magnificent Ampleforth Abbey.

Russell Downing beats a rider who has gone on to win stages in Grand Tours, Stephen Cummings in 2005 at the first Ryedale GP

The Ryedale Grand Prix has been promoted annually since 2005 (won by Russell Downing who rides in 2019) when it doubled as the National Road Race Championships, a feature that has since been repeated on two other occasions in 2008 and 2012 with the latter year seeing the inaugural promotion on the Ampleforth Circuit that takes in the spectacular Abbey grounds.

For each of its fifteen editions; The Grand Prix the events have benefitted from the generous sponsorship of Grass Concrete Limited and to recognise this long standing and vital contribution the organisers have this year re-styled the events, the Ryedale Grasscrete Grand Prix to incorporate their brand.

2019 sees both the Women’s and Men’s Grand Prix featuring as the finales of the British National Road Race Series. Ampleforth has always hosted an action packed event and so, could the tough uncompromising circuits through the Hambleton Hills see a final throw of the dice in the season long challenge?

The event date for 2019 coincides with the BBC Countryfile Live Weekend being hosted at nearby Castle Howard so why not make a weekend of it and enjoy a longer stay in Ryedale, for details of accommodation please visit www.visitryedale.co.uk.

History of the Ryedale Grand Prix

First organised in 2005 as the National Road Race Championships, further editions in 2008 and 2012 were also the National Championships. The Women’s Grand Prix was introduced in 2013.

The original home for the event was Duncombe Park in Helmsley. The event moved to its current Ampleforth Abbey site in 2012, although there has been a long association with Ampleforth which has been the Race HQ since 2005. Throughout its history the event has incorporated the Peter Longbottom Memorial in honour of the Malton Olympian who was killed in a road accident whilst cycling home in 1998

Grass Concrete Limited has sponsored the event since its inception and in financial terms that has seen a commitment of well into six figures over the years. Formed in 1970 Grass Concrete is a Wakefield based company mainly associated with its Grasscrete environmental paving system. With a network of 30 international partners around the World, this sees Grasscrete as a leader in technology that helps to prevent flooding.
