HMT Hospitals – Giant Junior Cycling Team has announced details of the four riders who will spend the 2020 season in their colours and hoping to follow in the footsteps of previous alumni of the team such as Tom Pidcock and James Shaw.

Four riders will race for the team throughout the season in 2020 with others being offered the opportunity to guest on international trips across the season when the team travels to races like Kuurne Brussels Kuurne, Bizkaiko Itzulia, La Phillippe Glibert and La Coupe du President de la Ville de Grudziadz – races where names like Sagan, Kwiatkowski, Landa and Evenepoel have stood on the podium in recent years.

The 2020 intake of riders to the squad is focussed on young talent, this being the first year in the junior ranks for all four riders. The 2020 HMT Hospitals – Giant Junior Cycling Team will comprise:

Aidan Lawrence from Bolton, Lancashire can boast a sub 20 minute 10 mile time trial as well as being the overall winner in the Youth Tour of Scotland 2019 and the
Veldegem Road Race in Belgium.

Joe Kiely from Cheshunt, Herts has already tasted international success winning the Dutch Jeugdtour Assen overall and the Italian Tuscan Cup race.

Joshua Giddings from Ilkeston, Derbyshire won the Sprints jersey in the Dutch Jeugdtour Assen, he is also a member of the British Cycling Junior Academy

Tom Lord from Altrincham, Cheshire has been consistent in the Nation Youth Series and represented Great Britain at the Youth Olympics in Baku, Azerbaijan

Reflecting on the continued development of the squad, Team Principle Tony Barrett said: “We’re focussing on riders coming up from the youth ranks for 2020 and it’s been
difficult to narrow that selection down to four, particularly as we’ve even had overseas applications from as far away as Norway and Poland, a reflection of the high esteem the team is held in abroad. There was a plethora of talent within the applicants and we would like to have signed a number of other good prospects, but as most British National Junior Series races limit the riders from one team to four in each event, we have reduced the team to that number so the whole squad can compete in these events”.

The team continues to be backed by Giant Cycles UK, Verge clothing, Continental tyres and will continue to use Bike Right lubricants.

Mr Barrett was effusive in his praise for the teams suppliers “We have fantastic backing from our co-sponsors, Giant bikes were completely reliable throughout 2019, we had no punctures in races thanks to the Continental tyres and the riders themselves praised Verge clothing starting with their Winter training kit right through to the lightweight clothing we used in the heat of the Spanish Summer.

Mr Barrett concluded by saying “The team had one of its most successful years in 2019, we are delighted that the riders moving up to the under 23 ranks have all
secured places in teams and now we look forward to an exiting 2020 with a core group of very talented young people.”
