The Course: British CX Championships

The course for the 2020 British Cyclocross Championships p/b Shimano – is a very different one from previous years in National Trophy and British championships held at Shrewsbury Sports Village.

A lot of the elements from the previous courses are in the new one designed by Dave and George but it’s a very different course.

Expecting a lot of riders to take advantage of the Friday practice (2-3pm) because there’s a lot to take in.

Some of the key changes
– Start: race starts further down on the tarmac strip to that used for previous start/finishes

The new start above with the riders lining up facing the camera

– Race will head up the start/finish in the opposite direction to previous years

The finish will be around where the cones are

– The course through the woods similar to previous years but racing in the opposite direction (clockwise) to last Trophy event at Shrewsbury

– A bridge has been added – steps up to the top, ramp back down to the grass. The bridge comes close to the finish so will be a key element. The race will go under and over the bridge.

– Lots of off camber as always and the course was water logged today (Thursday)

Riders heading away from the camera on this ‘much loved’ off camber section used many times at Shrewsbury
– Two sets of big steps, one up the ramp, the other the much used ones up the grass bank
– Less tarmac than previous courses at Shrewsbury
– There is an admission charge for spectators over 16 – £2 – so bring some change please

– Thanks to Matt Harris, who’s company makes steel fencing, for amending the fences at Shrewsbury round the football pitches so the race can pass through them, past the pits twice and then back through and onto the bridge

The much used steps in previous editions of races at Shrewsbury

Standing water in quite a few places making for a muddy race as always at Shrewsbury

After the opening tarmac section, the race hits the grass at this point on the course …

More on the course after practice….
