News: Entries Needed in West Midlands

Entries are needed for two handicap road races in the West Midlands on March 22 and 29, organizers say. Halesowen A&CC’s Aston on Clun handicap on March 22 and the CC Bridgnorth event on March 29 are the second and third rounds of the West Midlands road race series, and organizers hope that the different format will attract riders who might feel that the traditional 2/3/4 category Regional A races are too intimidating.

The races are run on two rolling courses suitable for riders of all abilities, Aston on Clun in South Shropshire and the CC Bridgnorth event on the long-established course at Bobbington in South Staffordshire.

“Both these races are being run in the same format, with the riders starting in ability groups separated by time intervals, with the idea that the race will come together after half distance so that everyone can get the experience of racing with the more seasoned riders in the field. It’s a format that works for evening races mid-season, we’d like to see more women racing and more riders who are fit enough to race but perhaps don’t want to begin with a full throated Regional A race,” said West Midlands board road lead William Fotheringham.

To make the races more accessible, veterans and women will be given the option of riding a group “down” for example second category women with third category men if they wish to do so. The races are ranked Regional C+ but carry full league points.

The West Midlands RRL then reverts to the “traditional” 2/3/4 Regional A format with the Phil Ward Memorial RR on April 26. Further details at:
