Lockdown Q&A with Lance Childs

Here is another Lockdown Q&A, this one with 16 year old Lance Childs who rides for the trainSharp Junior Development Team, has had a win already in 2020 and is studying sport at Canterbury College

Lockdown Q&A with Lance Childs
Brought to you by trainSharp

Q: Your last race was what and how did it go you?
Lance: My last race was the Full Gas March Hare where amazingly I got the win in that race so I went into this lockdown on a high from a win.

Q: With racing cancelled, what’s a typical week training wise for you?
Lance: With the racing cancelled, I’ve gone back into a tough training block similar to a winter training block. I’m trying to keep myself happy by going out by myself as much as I can until I can’t do that anymore.

Q: How long have you worked with trainSharp, how has your training changed and what are the best things about having a coach
Lance: I’ve been trained by trainSharp for seven months and have been coached by Alex Welburn. My training has changed dramatically as I’m now doing more weekly miles than ever before and this will help me with the longer races when the season starts again. The best thing about having a coach is having someone who understands you and what you’re dealing with and how to make you be the best you can be.

Q: Is the coaching just about numbers and efforts or other parts of the training/racing?
Lance: No, coaching is not just seeing how fast you are in numbers but this is a part of coaching. Stretching, nutrition, flexibility, strengthening and recovery are all parts of coaching to help riders get better.

Q: Enjoying the turbo or avoiding it like the virus?
Lance: I’m in the fortunate position that I have a Wattbike Pro at home that me and my family use with the virtual cycling app Zwift which works very well with the coaching software trainSharp uses called Today’s Plan. I’m trying to go out for solo training rides as much as possible though as it can get boring just training inside with lovely weather outside.

Q: What’s the hardest thing for you about the Lock Down?
Lance: The hardest thing about the lockdown is not racing after some good early season results which helped me get my Cat 2 licence just before the lockdown showed my form was good.

Q: Besides cycling, what’s your biggest distraction as lock down continues?
Lance: My biggest distraction other than cycling is my Xbox and playing online with my friends to have some communication with my friends and having some fun together online.

Q: What’s the bike that gets the most use by you and why what is the best thing about it?
Lance: The bike I have used the most in lockdown is my Dolan Rebus Aero race bike because it’s a beautiful looking bike and it’s a very smooth bike to ride and I love riding it.

Q: What’s the weirdest thing you have seen since this crisis began
Lance: The weirdest thing I’ve seen during lockdown was the Virtual Tour of Flanders, not sure pros racing virtual is the future! It’s fun seeing them ride on Zwift though.

Q: Finally, where you do you enjoy riding the most in this country or abroad?
Lance: I prefer racing abroad in countries such as Belgium and The Netherlands because the races are sometimes longer and they close towns and every road on the course for the riders which is a huge difference to the road races (like SERRL) in England which are on open roads.

Lance would like to thank to Alex and Jon at trainSharp for their support and advice. And also thank all the trainSharp Development Team sponsors.

Thank you to Lance for that excellent Q & A and good luck for 2020 … If you are unsure about any aspect of your training then why not drop paul@trainsharp.co.uk an email. He can then put you in touch with one of their coaches.
