trainSharp Mini Chat with James Shaw

This week trainSharp caught up up with their inspire talent programme rider James Shaw for him to share advice for aspiring juniors and U23 riders pursuing the dream of becoming a professional cyclist.

James, who has recently returned from the Elite Road Race World Championships says when asked what would be his best bit of advice for a young aspiring junior/u23, replies with “Don’t take life too seriously. As a junior and Under 23, I’d be flapping if I had a mechanical and DNF’d a race, but I didn’t realise it’s all part of the learning curve.”

Asked what is his standout moment that helped that transition from amateur to professional, he says “For me, I think it was the stagier with Lotto Soudal at the end of my final year as an amateur. This is like a trial run to see if you can make the jump”.

When it comes to learning to be a better rider and racer, James explained “watch races on tv and study it as if it was a degree.”

Asked what is his most memorable race, James replies “Hard to say really as each race has its memorable moments, some good and some bad. The Dauphine 2017 does stand a little higher than the rest though. The level of racing was something else”.
