News: National Road Series 2021

Due to the ongoing challenges presented by the pandemic, the Tour of the Reservoir (men, 5-6 June), Alexandra Tour of the Reservoir (women, 5-6 June) and Stockton Cycling Festival Grand Prix (men and women, 18 July) have been cancelled at the request of the event organisers, and will not be rescheduled in 2021. In a statement, the organisers of the Tour of the Reservoir and Alexandra Tour of the Reservoir said: “We and Project Genesis are still committed to 2022, when we will be able to give Consett, its citizens, and the sport itself an event worthy of its status, and also an event that can pay its respects to Mike Hodgson, the event’s organiser for 37 years, who passed away last April due to Covid-19.”

Another change to the National Road Series calendar is that The Rapha Lincoln Grand Prix (men and women, 9 May) will not take place on its planned date, however the organisers are continuing to look for alternative dates in the calendar. The Tour Series too has been postponed and will now take place during the first two weeks of August (men & women).

Due to these changes, the Women’s National Series will now begin with the Women’s CiCLE Classic on Sunday 27 June, while the men’s series will begin with the Beaumont Trophy on Sunday 4 July.

Last month, it was announced that the Klondike Grand Prix, which was due to take place on Sunday 18 April, has also sadly been cancelled along with the CiCLE Classic.

British Cycling’s Elite Road Racing Manager, Erick Rowsell, said: “We fully support the difficult decisions which have been taken by the organisers of the Tour of the Reservoir, Alexandra Tour of the Reservoir and Stockton Cycling Festival Grand Prix, and I want to thank them for the considerable thought and effort which they put into ensuring that the events could return safely after being forced to cancel last year.”

“We continue to work hard to find a feasible alternative for the Lincoln Grand Prix and will provide a further update in due course, while we also continue to provide additional support for those organisers whose races take place later in the year. There are clearly some sizeable challenges facing event organisers, who rely on the support of local stakeholders and communities in order to take place, and I know that the current uncertainty will be demoralising for teams and riders.”
