Birmingham 2022 recruits experienced competition manager to help deliver biggest ever Commonwealth sports programme

Organisers of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games have announced that Martin Bridgwood has joined the team as the Cycling Competition Manager, helping to deliver the biggest sports programme in Commonwealth Games history and the largest multi-sport event to be held in the UK for a decade.

Martin will be part of the team delivering 19 sports and eight para sports and he’ll be responsible for the planning and delivery of the cycling competitions, ensuring that they are organised in accordance with the UCI’s rules and regulations.

The role will also see Martin being tasked with ensuring that cyclists, team officials and technical officials are provided with all the facilities and services they require at all of the training venues, as well as the official competition venues for cycling.

Martin, who grew up in Great Barr in Birmingham, was the Track Cycling Manager at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and since then has worked on numerous international and national cycling events. He is an International commissaire for track and road cycling, both of which are included on the Birmingham 2022 sports programme, along with mountain bike, which will be held at Cannock Chase Forest.

Martin said: “With three disciplines for cycling on the sports programme for the Games, cycling fans will be well catered for. Our cycling venues are really varied with Lee Valley VeloPark, St Nicholas Park in Warwick, West Park in Wolverhampton and Cannock Chase Forest all included, so it is going to be a really interesting role.”
