Result: Monster Cross 2021

The previous days rain and endurance run on the course made for hard going at Sunday’s three hour Monster Cross at Catton Park in Staffordshire. 192 riders lined up for the start, with three hours of riding facing them. The 6.5km course through grass and woodland which had been churned to a thick sticky mud would prove very testing for many riders and machines.

As the riders completed their first lap it was international ‘cross riders Toby and Dan Barnes leading the field through in a little over twenty minutes. In third was Graham Briggs with Ali Slater on his wheel, while Nick Craig was steadily moving through the field after a late start due to mechanical problems. Graham Briggs’ first lap was his last, punctures on lap two forcing his early retirement.

The pairs teams could take time out to rest and clean bikes, whilst the solo riders could only use what equipment they had available and those with a single bike start to struggle. At the front Toby Barnes continued to lap at a steady pace, whilst Dan eased slightly and was passed by Ali Slater. Nick Craig continued to make up ground lost at the start and moved up into fourth place. In the Solo Women’s race it was Xan Crees who was lapping at a pace no one else could match, extending her lead over Veteran Alison Kinloch with each passing lap, with Alderney Baker in third.

After the first hour of racing several riders had retired but the sun came out and a gentle breeze started to dry the course and make things slightly easier. The welcome sound of the bell came as Toby Barnes crossed the line after two and half hours of racing and the final lap made his finishing time of 2:44:47, over three minutes ahead of Slater. Xan Crees continued her march to victory in the women’s race, finishing in 3:04:59, followed by Kinloch and Baker.

Overall, feedback from riders was that Monster Cross had been just that, a big event which could only be tamed by riders bringing their best to the race.
