MEN’S ROAD RACE REPORT

Third for Junior John Roberts — Having driven and walked the course, I was curious to how the races were so asked third placed in the Men’s race, John Roberts, how his race was. This is what he said … “It’s been a long time since I last did a proper hilly road race, and that was when I was still as a youth racer, so naturally I was feeling nervous before the start.”

“The race began proper after a short neutral section out of the village of Hade Edge, and at the same time the rain began. Over the next 2 hours, we raced through rain and hail, covering 45 miles and 4000ft of climbing. Numerous attacks were launched early in the race, but the decisive move happened with about 30 miles remaining. It consisted of myself and 3 other riders, and we were soon to catch a 5th who had been off the front solo for a lap beforehand.

With 2 laps to go, Saint Piran’s Jenson Young attacked the break, and rode away to claim first place with a 2 minute gap. The four of us remaining in the breakaway rode together until the final climb to the finish, where we had to ride hard to avoid being caught by the chasing group. The pace proved too much for half of our small break, and in the end I finished in third just behind a strong Aiden Lawrence, with a 15 second gap to the chasing group.”

“I am extremely proud of the result, I had gone into the race with almost no expectations so I’m happy to have kept up with some of the region’s best climbers in my first road race as a junior.”
