With little racing for Elite riders, Giles Pidcock and his team came out and announced they would hold a National B test race, the Return to Racing for Big Dogs, and when it was first announced, the response was immense. Giles was over whelmed with entries and from them, comes a first class line up.

For those wondering what is a ‘big dog’, the race manual says “Dean Downing uses the term to describe the big ring – as in “I put it in the ‘big dog’ and gapped everyone over the top”. But here we’re using the term to describe the better riders in the country, those trying to make a living and maybe a career out of racing their bike. The race will decide who on the day is the biggest of the big dogs.”

“Everyone is clearly very keen because we’ve been inundated with entries” adds Giles. “There seem to be many big dogs wanting to race! It’s obviously been a very difficult year for many people but for those of them trying to build a career in bike racing, it will have been awful. One of the worst things has been the uncertainty of it all. It must have been hard training whilst not knowing when you would be racing again.”

“Despite all of this we have been lucky to have been able to still ride and hopefully the bike has been a good friend to you through these dark days. Happily, the bleakest times now seem to be behind us and it seems we’re now on our way back to “normal”.”

For us, the first sign of normalness returning is these test events being arranged. The Government through the Department of Culture, Media, Culture and Sport (DCMCS) wants to see a few events take place in a controlled way as a prelude to racing across the board from June onwards. This all means that whilst this test event will feel like a normal bike race once the flag drops, there are new rules to follow before and afterwards.

Servicing and feeding from team cars will be allowed on the left hand side only. Team cars will be permitted in the convoy. The position of the vehicles will determined by a draw. Drivers of the team cars need have “Team Manager” status on their BC licence.

The course can be roughly described as 1/3 flat, 1/3 descending and 1/3 climbing. There is approximately 590ft/180 metres climbing per 8.2 mile/13.2km lap. The climb, on the northern part of the circuit, ascends in a series of steps with the finish line positioned roughly half way up. The race will be 6 laps/50 miles/80km.
