News: Women’s West Midlands RR Series

Organisers in the West Midlands are proud to announce the inception of a summer women’s road race series for riders from all regions, based on five new women’s races set up in the area as racing returns in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We have a number of organisers who have decided to run women’s events for the first time this year, so it seemed to make sense to link them together into a series that we hope will draw riders from across the country, and that will reward them on an overall basis as well as for the individual events,” said William Fotheringham, who has the road racing brief on the West Midlands Board.

The decision has been prompted by the success of the Halesowen Women’s National B race on May 16, which caused other organisers within the region to put on women’s Nat B races. The local organisers have agreed that the HACC race held on May 16 should count as the first race in the series, which will be open to riders from all regions, which will carry an overall prize list to at least the first three, and a prize for the best West Mids woman.

“There are a variety of courses here, we have had a hilly first round already, and the second round at RAF Cosford is a three and a half mile circuit which offers traffic free racing, basically like a flat road race with no traffic,” said British Cycling Regional Event Officer Richard Wickenden. “The three other rounds will be on rolling circuits with short climbs, with enough climbing to make for a tough enough race without ruling out strong all rounders.”

The further rounds in the West Midlands Women’s Road Race series are:

— RAF Cosford Hell of the North Runway, July 4. (NB this is listed on the British Cycling website under closed circuit races)
— Solihull CC road race, July 11.
— Aston on Clun/La Course en Tete RR, August 1
— A fifth round will be run on August 15 to coincide with the West Midlands men’s regional championships – like the other races in the series, it will be open to riders from all regions, but will incorporate a W Mids women’s regional title as well.
