This weekend will see the first National Series road race for Women since 2019 with 140 riders in each race on a course that packs a big punch from the word go…
Startlists: Womens/Junior Men’s Cicle Classic RRs
The Course – in the 105km of the race, the parcour is packed with challenges – read about it
The Women’s race will see the best of the riders racing in Britain as well as UCI teams Cams Basso, AWOL- O’Shea and Drops. The line up also includes the best Junior Women in the country such as Zoe Backstedt, Flora Perkins, Grace Lister and Millie Couzens and it will be very interesting to see how they fare against the likes of Megan Barker, cyclocross star Anna Kay, Elizabeth Bennett, and Emily Meakin. Other names that pop up in the results on a regular basis include Monica Greenwood, Charlotte Berry, cyclo cross stars Amira Mellor & Ffion James, climber Nicole Coates, time trialist Megan Dickerson, winner at Loughborough recently Beth Morrow, and the expereinced Natalie Grinczer. Those names are the tip of the iceberg of possible contenders such as is the strength in depth these days in the womens sport.
Fourth in 2019, Jo Tindley returns for her new team (Pro-Noctis – Redchilli Bikes – Heidi Kjeldsen). “Yeah I guess it was up there as a career highlight” Says Jo of her result in this huge race. “It was the best result I’ve ever had in the National Series on the road, especially on a course like that. 2019 was 3rd time lucky for me in that I had no issues all race which was a huge factor to being in that front group along with my Cross Country MTB background.”
“I think there is A LOT of skill and bravery involved with this race and you also need Lady Luck on your side! No matter how much prep or how much form you have, just so many things can happen that you can’t control. The best thing about this for me are the sectors; I just love them!”
In the Junior Men’s race, the recent Tour of Yorkshire showed what strength in depth there is there with two bunch sprints in two road races in the stage race. Winner of the Junior Tour of Yorkshire, Max Poole will wear number 1 and he will be part of one of the strongest teams in the race along with Josh Charlton, Aidan Lawrence and Finlay Pickering. Also racing will be Josh Giddings and Tyler Hannay who made the podium in Yorkshire along with Joshua Tarling who was 4th on the same time.
Noah Hobbs, who won stage 3 of the Junior Men’s Tour of Yorkshire showed he can win sprints against the best in the country whilst Lukas Nerurkar not only won stage 2 of the Junior Tour of Yorkshire with a solo attack but also right up there in the sprint on stage 3 whilst a rider who can time trial strongly, Harrison Tacey will be racing as will his sister April Tacey in the Women’s event. Ben Askey showed great form in Yorkshire, whilst a rider missing from Yorkshire but winner of National Trophy Junior Men CX races, Joe Blackmore of the ROTOR Race Team is down to ride.
Looking down the results from Yorkshire, it’s clear that whilst there are some riders who stand out, the strength in depth is such that so many of the riders racing the event, stand a good chance of making the podium providing luck and good legs are with them on the day.
In 2021 the opportunities to view the two races are numerous. For the enthusiastic spectator the race is possibly the most spectator friendly races to ever watch. it is possible to see the race in over 7-8 places during its circuitous route from Melton back to Melton.
Suggestions:
1. The START in Melton town centre with the start of the Junior Men at 09.30 and the Elite Women at 14.00.
2. In Somerby for the first passage of the race there.
3. Owston or Burrough on the Hill for the races 5/6 passages through those villages. At Owston enjoy the party atmosphere of the day, or enjoy a more relaxed view of the race from The ‘Stag & Hounds’ Public House at Burrough over Sunday lunch and or a welcome drink.
4. The top of Cold Overton hill for the second Queen/King of the Hills climb.
5. Or onto ‘Somerberg’ (Bruce’s Lane) for the ultimate CiCLE Classic experience .
6. The entry or exit of the penultimate rough sector of the race at Sawgate Lane just on the edge of Melton.
7. In Melton town centre for the first passage and then spectacular finish of the junior Men’s race, and the first passage of the town by the riders in the Women’s race who will contest a sprint for the ‘Pork Pie’ sprint award donated by Dickenson & Morris and Brentigby Gin before commencing their finishing circuit via Burton Lazers and Stapleford.
8. At the FINISH in Sherrard Street around 12.00 noon for the Junior Men, and 16.30 for the Women.
