Next Sunday sees two more National A road races with the Men’s and Women’s Grasscrete Ryedale Grand Prix in North Yorkshire at Ampleforth – provisional startlist
Next Weekend: Grasscrete Ryedale GP
Sunday 22nd August 2021
From the organisation: After last year’s cancellation due to Covid-19 , we are happy to be back racing again, with our Grand Prix event. Getting back into the swing of organising hasn’t been without its challenges, but the Ryedale team has been largely able to re-assemble. Unfortunately, we shall be without two of our stalwarts; Mike Smith, who had been our Master of Ceremonies since the event began in 2005 and had planned to step into retirement last year. Sadly, he instead passed away due to a sudden illness. Also missing will be Mike Hodgson, the long time organiser of the Tour of the Reservoir and our formidable first corner marshal. He was an early victim to Covid-19, in March of last year. We have so much to thank the two Mike’s for and, we will miss them greatly. but we will of course pay a tribute to them before we begin our first race.
Our venue at the magnificent Ampleforth Abbey provides lots of space for social distanced spectating and so we are able to welcome back cycling fans. Missing for this year will be our Event Guest Package, but other than these changes, the event will be the same Ryedale Grand Prix that has always delivered a great racing experience.
Once again our Women’s and Men’s Grand Prix’s will feature as key rounds of British Cycling’s National Road Series,. With a reduced number of events in 2021, the series will perhaps be more of a sprint than a marathon, but this will no doubt heighten the importance of the Ryedale Grand Prix to Elite level Cycling in Britain.
This will be the sixteenth Grand Prix event series in partnership with our sponsors Grass Concrete Limited and supported by Ryedale District Council. With each year, we have looked to provide courses that are both challenging and sporting and we will once again for 2021 be using Ampleforth Abbey as our venue; the ninth occasion that we’ve done so.
Each edition of the Ryedale has featured memorable racing from the off and we look forward to hopefully rewarding our spectators with yet more of the same this year. We can all play our part in keeping events on the calendar by commenting on social media and encouraging the crowds to come out and watch you race. All that remains from me is to wish you all a successful Ryedale 2021 in whichever way your success is measured. – Bob Howden.
Although listed on the start sheet, the last winner of the Men’s event, James Shaw, will be racing in Norway. The rider on the right, Jacob Scott, second in the Lancaster GP, maybe at Ryedale – awaiting confirmation from Canyon DHB Sungod of their team.

Previous winners & History of the Ryedale Grand Prix
First organised in 2005 as the National Road Race Championships, further editions in 2008 and 2012 were also the National Championships. The Women’s Grand Prix was introduced in 2013.
The original home for the event was Duncombe Park in Helmsley. The event moved to its current Ampleforth Abbey site in 2012, although there has been a long association with Ampleforth which has been the Race HQ since 2005. Throughout its history the event has incorporated the Peter Longbottom Memorial in honour of the Malton Olympian who was killed in a road accident whilst cycling home in 1998
Grass Concrete Limited has sponsored the event since its inception and in financial terms that has seen a commitment of well into six figures over the years. Formed in 1970 Grass Concrete is a Wakefield based company mainly associated with its Grasscrete environmental paving system. With a network of 30 international partners around the World, this sees Grasscrete as a leader in technology that helps to prevent flooding.
