Result: Ryedale Grasscrete Grand Prix

After a day and night of rain and on slippery roads, some which would have been at home in the CiCLE Classic, the day of racing at Ampleforth commenced with the Women’s race where attacking riding made the race tough, real tough.

Illi Gardner (CAMS-Basso) sprinted in ahead of her breakaway companion Becky Storrie (Brother UK – Cycle Team OnForm) on the final kick to the finish to win the Ryedale Grasscrete Women’s Grand Prix. The pair managed to break away on the third lap of the race and worked strongly together, and never looked like being caught by the chasers. Corrine Side (Pro-Noctis-Redchilli Bikes-Heidi Kjeldsen) was third in the race to clinch the final place on the podium.

Before Gardner and Storrie escaped, the peloton began to split on the second of two longer laps around the circuit, causing a leading group of 25 riders that quickly slimmed down to just nine. It was from this group that Gardner and Storrie then broke away, creating an advantage that swelled to two minutes on the penultimate lap.

Win for Alex Peters

Perfect timing by former Sky professional Alex Peters (SwiftCarbon Pro Cycling) saw him just outsprint Toby Barnes (Crimson Orientation Marketing RT) to win the long running Ryedale Grasscrete Men’s Grand Prix. Oliver Rees (Trinity Racing) was third in the six man group which escaped on the final climb on the last lap.

The pace was high from the opening lap and a small breakaway formed. Callum Macleod (Canyon DHB SunGod), Oliver Maxwell (Saint Piran), Isaac Mundy (Richardsons-Trek DAS), George Kimber (Spirit Bontrager BSS Rotor), George Peden (Team PB Performance) and Matthew Houlberg (Meudon Pedal Heaven Le Col RT) were reeled back in on the second of three longer laps. Canyon DHB SunGod’s Thomas Mein and Zappi Racing Team’s Matthew Kingston then distanced the peloton on the third lap, with their lead eventually growing to 3’20” at its peak.

The pair worked well together and held their lead for a long time but soon repeated attacks at the head of the peloton soon pushed their advantage down. SwiftCarbon Pro Cycling and Canyon DHB SunGod drove the pace behind, eventually catching the breakaway duo with two laps remaining right on the start/finish line.

It was on the final shorter circuit that the four riders of Toby Barnes (Crimson Orientation Marketing RT), Isaac Mundy (Richardsons-Trek DAS), Alex Peters (SwiftCarbon Pro Cycling) and Max Stedman (Canyon DHB SunGod), managed to distance the peloton. They were caught by two chasers in Stedman’s teammate Callum Macleod and Trinity Racing’s Oliver Rees. This six-man group stayed together until the final 100m to the line, when Peters sprinted in for the win.
