Quiz time: Lucia Bruton (Saint Piran)

Today’s quiz is with Saint Piran Women’s Racing Team rider Lucia Bruton who lives in West Sussex and has been racing for three years. Lucia looks forward to trying some racing in Belgium in 2022!

Q: How did you come to race bikes?
Lucia: I used to be a competitive tennis player, but due to injury I could no longer play at the same level. Instead, I started running & commuting on my bike. I soon fell in love with cycling and wanted to improve, competing with the guys in my club. I remember going to Guildford Town Crit for the first time and the town was buzzing! I couldn’t help but get immersed in the atmosphere. That’s when I decided I needed to try racing crits!

Q: How difficult was 2020 with little racing or did it give you time to reset, refresh and focus on 2021?
Lucia: I started my business (Velofique Designs) in 2019 whilst still working a full time job. To be honest, in 2020 I wasn’t able to train/ride as much as I wanted to however it allowed me to focus on my own business and truly dedicate my time to painting.

Q: Do you think you came out of 2020 stronger, the same or less strong as you were before that season of no races?
Lucia: I definitely came out of 2020 less fit, however, also more determined.

Q: What was the highlight of your racing in 2021?
Lucia: My highlight for 2021 was working with my team, having a plan for the Hitchin Nomad RR and seeing it pay off with my teammate on the podium!

Q: What race in your career is the one that still gives you the biggest buzz?
Lucia: The Tour Series is my favourite racing.

Q: Were there learning moments in 2021 races and if so, what were they?
Lucia: I have learnt just how important teamwork can be.

Q: What’s the furthest you have travelled for a bike race in 2021?
Lucia: I travelled seven hours to do the Otley Crit, finished the race and drove straight back that night!

Q: If a younger rider asked you to describe how a national level women’s road race unfolds, is there a common way the races are raced or does that depend on the course?
Lucia: National road races, like any race can vary in tactics etc. However one thing is that every race starts off full gas. You need to fight for position!

Q: During a race, do you find there is a lot of talk between riders in the same team to deal with changes in the race like breaks going, key points in the course approaching and the finish coming fast?
Lucia: I find there is communication occasionally within the races, however plans and possible scenarios are more often discussed before the race starts.

Q: Do you go into a race nervous or intimated by other riders or do you have the confidence to hold you own and race the race confidently in your own style?
Lucia: I get nervous before any race no matter how big or small, however as soon as the race starts, the nerves all disappear and I just feel focused.

Q: Do you train more in a given week in winter than what you do in summer when there is a lot of racing and travelling?
Lucia: I get more miles in during the winter, however to stay motivated I tend to ride more cyclocross and MTB.

Q: Do you train on a training bike or the race bike …
Lucia: I have a winter bike to train on and my summer race bike.

Q: Do you cross train at all, running, swimming, gym or other disciplines like MTB
Lucia: I run, ride cross, & MTB enduro

Q: What type of race suits you best? (Time Trial, Circuit Race, Hilly or Flat road races)
Lucia: I tend to suit Crit racing and I like more aggressive, technical courses.

Q: What are your tips for staying warm on a long winter ride?
Lucia:Staying warm is difficult for me, but my Castelli Estremo gloves & perfetto jacket are a must for me!

Q: What are goals for 2022
Lucia: 2022 goal is to try out racing in Belgium
