VIDEOS – THE FIRST OF 12 TAKEN ON THE DAY

Two for the price of one! Perfs Pedal winner Damien Clayton (WIV Sungod) chats to a journalist about the race (4 minutes) and then I ask for a quick 1 one minute summary as well… pre race interview to come!

Mick Waite – organiser of the Perfs Pedal since the 1960s – with the wind blowing a gale but the rain yet to reach Southwick, we grabbed a quick word with Mick before the race in between all his running around.

Interview: Tim Elverson, boss of team WIV Sungod – Thanks to Damien Clayton, Tim kept his 100 per cent record at the Perfs Pedal Road Race even with just two riders in the race. After the presentation, we had a long chat with Tim about the race, his team signings and his team’s ambitions in 2022 and beyond

Chris McNamara: A rider who has been in the results of this race, in the top 10s, for almost 20 years (results listing here )  is trainSharp coach Chris McNamara. We chatted pre race before the rain arrived about his own coaching and the race and life is busy again after the depths of the covid pandemic in 2020.

Ollie Akers: A rider, who like me, spent the winter in the mud doing cyclocross and now has his sights on the road season; Junior Ollie Akers racing for the Z Junior team about to get some experience of a early season classic. At least the weather should not have bothered him after a winter of cyclo cross!

Alex Paton: A former winner of the race when racing for Tim Elverson, Alex was on the start line playing down his chances as I grabbed a quick chance for a reaction to riding the event.

Will Roberts who races for the Welsh Academy and was a winner of a round of the Tour Series in 2021. Will has been racing the track in the winter and kicked off his road season at the Perfs Pedal

Joe Holt: Joe Holt, part of the Welsh Academy, Joe and his team were brought to the Perfs by a former rider who knows the race well, Rob Partridge. Joe has already been racing internationally on the track in the Winter. We chat about that and his aspirations for 2022 with the Commonwealth Games being the big one!

Alex Richardson: – the winner of the Lincoln Grand Prix who has spent two years racing abroad, is back in the UK racing for himself and very happy to be doing so. Alex set the Perfs Pedal alight in the pouring rain with a solo attack that shaped the second half of the race and was racing for a podium place until he went off course and punctured (we’re told). Pre-race, we talked about his plans for 2022 …

Josh Whitehead: Lancaster GP winner – pre Perfs chat with the new Wiv Sungod rider

PHOTO REPORT

With a strong cold wind blowing, riders lined up at 11am outside the HQ at Southwick for the season opener. Two surprise signings pre race were former winner Yanto Barker and Lincoln GP winner Alex Richardson.

As in previous editions, the race had a short neutral section before the riders were released for the Perfs pedal Smashfest

On top of the climb, the peloton had lost a lot of riders with small groups and stragglers, chasing to get back on with a tailwind section to come

At the foot of the climb on the next lap, Thomas Heal (Jock Wadley winner) was out front alone as the peloton was pretty compact with still groups and riders adrift.

A lap later and Lancaster GP winner Josh Whitehead was hammering it along  as they started the climb again.

Lap 4 and Alex Richardson had a big gap on the rest as he went solo in the pouring rain

A small chase group had formed (above) and the peloton wasn’t hanging about either

Final lap and Alex Richardson was still solo but he was caught and then he went off course and punctured whilst his rivals raced to the finish.

On that final lap, Damien Clayton had emerged from the peloton and with Samuel Painter, chased down Alex Richardson.

The peloton start their final lap

The win goes to Damien Clayton who chose the right moment to go solo and take the win around 10 seconds ahead of Painter (below).

Euan Woodliffe  wins the bunch sprint for third place.
