Event News: Races on Goodwood Worlds Course

Road Races on Goodwood World’s Course (Saturday. April 2nd) — Celebrating the 40th anniversary this year of the Goodwood Worlds (West Sussex), Racing Club Ravenna will be hosting a brand new road race taking on the local iconic climb, Kennel Hill, used in the World championship.

In 1982, the World Road Race Championship’s were held at Goodwood, West Sussex and 40 years later, April 2nd 2022 will see race day kick off with a National B mens race over 75 miles taking on 7 laps of the course. This is followed by a Regional A women’s race starting at 14:00 which will be 4 laps ( (42.8 miles). Both races finish at the same location as the World’s finished back in 1982.

Looking back at the 82 World championship, the men’s race looked like Jonathan Boyer, USA, was going to take the win after an attack on the final climb. But rather controversially, he was chased down by his own country man Greg Lemond allowing Giuseppe Saronni of Italy to spring board that move on the final kick and take the victory.

Mandy Jones of GB, considered an outsider, won the Women’s title. She attacked solo with nearly a lap to go, eventually taking the win by 10 seconds. Jones’s victory is often referred to as the “accidental win”.

Seb Ottley of the Racing Club Ravenna alongside Phil Webber from British Cycling have worked hard over the past few years to get a brand new risk assessment approved for this new exciting road race. The start finish will take place at the same location as the finish line in 1982, at the top of the long 2.2mile climb up Kennel Hill outside Goodwood Racecourse on Selhurstpark Road.

The men’s events has over 50 entries so far, including GB hour record holder Dan Bigham, National master road race champion Chris McNamara and two top 10 finishers from this year’s Perfs Pedal, Matt Houlberg and Jack Freeman

The women’s event is currently up to 21 entries, with a variety of riders including 5 entries from newly formed Laka Pedal Mafia RT.

Entry closing date is 19th March | Entry is open now on the BC site here

Sponsors for the event include, FatCreations, Bioracer, SiS, Cannondale, Saddleback, Lezyne, HJC, Hunt Wheels, WrapBike, C-Bear Strada wheels and Electrical Solutions of Chichester
