PDQ Race Series Round 2 Masters Race Report
The second round of the PDQ Race Series Masters Mens race again saw 36 riders taking to the start line. The Sprints Competition determined on the night by 2 intermediate sprints, that also count towards an overall Carbotech Ltd Sprints Competition, is seeing some exciting new dynamics to the races.

Jason Streather of PDQ Cycle Coaching attacked from the start and after he was reeled back in multiple counter attacks were launched which split the bunch into 2. This was how it would stay for the majority of the race as it settled down to prepare for the intermediate sprints.

At 15 minutes into the race we had the first intermediate sprint, this was won by Justin Hoy of Pronto Bikes Ltd, followed by Steve Whitehurst of Reflex Racing, Gerry Bowditch of Pontypool RCC and Tristan Stevens of PDQ Cycle Coaching.

At 30 minutes into the race we had our second intermediate sprint. This was won by Matthew Norris of Primera-Teamjobs, followed by Gerry Bowditch, Robert Pears of Bath Cycling Club and Steve Whitehurst. That left 3 riders tied on 5 Sprint point for the evening and it would come down to who placed highest at the end of the race to decide the Sprints Winner on the night.

With roughly 10 minutes of racing left it was Grant Leavy of Velo Club Bristol that attacked and quickly gained a 15 second lead over the bunch. With the series contenders in both the overall standings and in the sprint competition looking at each other, the bunch was too cagey to put up an organised chase. It did look with a couple of laps to go that Grant would stay away for the win. However, the chase did start with Rob Pears and Matthew Norris doing a lot of work to bring it back.

And so it came down to a bunch sprint, which obviously played into the hands of the sprinters, and it was king of the Sprints on the night Justin Hoy that took the overall win for round 2. Justin claims not only the Carbotech donated £25 Sprints winnings on the night but also snatched the overall series lead from Andy Hoskins of Cardiff JIF to be in with the chance of winning the Bespoke Rocker Plate R1 £395 rocker board and Fantastic Finds Annual Shield.

Gerry Bowditch will again don the Stimulus Sport Green Sprinters Jersey as he extends his lead in the Carbotech Sprints Competition. The red Stimulus Sport Overall Leaders jersey changes hands for the next round on 22nd June as Justin Hoy takes the overall lead just 2 points clear of Robert Pears and a further 1 point ahead of Andy Hoskins in 3rd overall.

Thank you to our volunteers and officials, without volunteers we could not run these races: Diane and Stephen Marshall, Paul Cann, Lisa-Jayne Booth, Bob Symons, Ian White, Paul Rogoll, Martin Harris.

And a huge thank you to our Sponsors of this years race series who we couldn’t do this without.
