RR Result: Beaumont Trophy/Curlew Cup

Sunday saw the postponed round of the National Road Series take place at Stamfordham in Northumbria with two events, the Curlew Cup in the morning and then later in the day, the Men’s Beaumont Trophy event.

In the Curlew Cup, a very much reduced line up of just over 30 riders took to the start facing three laps of the 25 mile circuit featuring the well known climb of the Ryals. A team that shares the same sponsor as VeloUK, Brother UK-LDN saw their revelation Alex Morrice take maximum points in the first Queen of the Hills sprint. The race then saw a lone effort by Miriam Jessett who attacked off the front of the race before being joined by Jess Finney and Lucy Harris on the second of the big laps.

Finney and Harris dropped Jessett whilst one of the season’s star riders Sammie Stuart, the National Series overall leader, punctured. Sammie had two bike changes and as ever, showed a great deal of determination to make it back into the race. The breakaway of Finney and Harris was caught and on the final climb of the Ryals, Alex Morrice (Brother UK/LDN) made her move along with Connie Hayes. There was by now just a very small select group left and in the downhill sprint to the line, Alice McWilliam was too quick for her rivals defeating Elinor Barker with Monica Greenwood third. Manx International star Lucy Lee (Brother UK/Team LDN) was fourth while Hayes was the first of the Under 23 riders in fifth place.

Sammie Stuart, who despite her efforts in getting back into the race after her puncture, was right up there in sixth and the 2022 National Road Series winner. Another revelation from the season, Junior Emma Jeffers, was the best Under 23 rider in the series. CAMS-Basso won the team title.

MEN’S BEAUMONT TROPHY
With a strong line up of riders for the Men’s event, it was a case of Saint Piran yet again dominating the race just like they did in the Ryedale Grasscrete Grand Prix in August with Alexandar Richardson and Jack Rootkin-Gray coming into Stamfordham on their own with Jack crossing the line first in the Saint Piran 1-2.

A large breakaway with 18 riders formed early on whilst behind, National Road Series leader Rob Scott was struggling due to not being well (chest infection) and was a DNF. Jack Rootkin-Gray and Alex Richardson meanwhile were at the sharp end of the race along with Ross Lamb of Ribble Weldtite, Jim Brown and Josh Whitehead (both WiV SunGod) and Ed Morgan.

The race for the win was soon down to just two riders as Rootkin-Gray and Richardson distanced the others and it was Jack Rootkin Gray who won the race, saying later “the perfect ending to an amazing second half of the season. Cycling hasn’t always been easy over the past two years, but I finally feel like I’ve found my place, and my people. Life is good, long may it continue”.

Ross Lamb of Ribble Weldtite was third with Josh Whitehead fourth and Jim Brown fifth. The series went to Rob Scott who had an amazing season whilst Jack Rootkin-Gray’s was the leading Under 23 whilst WiV SunGod was top team in the series.
