First year under-23 Joe Brookes got his season off to the best possible with a decisive win in Sunday’s road race run by Halesowen A&CC Academy, first round in the season-long West Midlands road race league. Midway through the 56-mile race at Aston in Clun in Shropshire, Brookes’s team mates pulled back a threatening looking five-rider break which had gained close to a minute, and as the bunch closed on the break with three of the seven laps remaining, Brookes followed a move from national junior cyclo-cross champion Seb Grindley, to bridge to the remnants of the earlier escape.
Grindley and Brookes then rode clear of the remnants of the break on the penultimate lap, rapidly gaining a minute in their turn, with two Halesowen riders monitoring a chase group of half a dozen riders when they moved clear of the bunch after the bell to ensure the leading duo stayed clear. At the chequered flag, Brookes left his effort late in the uphill finish to leave Grindley trailing by two bike lengths. Halesowen Academy would like to thank Fenwicks, Swinnerton Cycles, Secret Training and BroadBean deli for providing prizes in kind; the West Mids road race league resumes on April 2 with the Wolverhampton Wheelers’ Two Counties race for 3rdand 4th categories on the Bobbington circuit – entries remain open until this weekend.
