The best of cycling was on display in thrilling men’s and women’s open races at the Coronation Crits on Sunday. They were held in the first ever racing on the brand new West Lothian Cycle Circuit in Linlithgow. Over 200 cyclists from across Scotland took part in this unique weekend of coaching and cycling that was testing for riders and the track. The Coronation Crits incorporated the Scottish Youth circuit race series and was organised by West Lothian Clarion and included races for riders age 5 and up. The opening weekend at the circuit was was well attended with over 200 competitors from Aberdeen to East Kilbride taking part on a glorious sunny day.

Organiser Craig Duncan said “West Lothian Clarion are grateful for all the work by Linlithgow Community Development Trust to deliver this world class 1km circuit, and we’ve been getting ready for this day for 10 years while the funds to build the project were raised. So it was really gratifying when the under 8 riders rolled off the start line, they weren’t even born when plans to build this amazing facility were first proposed. It’s been a long journey to get to this day and now we just want to do the circuit justice and get more folk cycling and racing”

“Thanks must go to all the dedicated volunteers but also LCDT, Xcite Linlithgow and West Lothian Council who provided a license so we could run this event.

Linlithgow Community Development Trust Board member Fraser Falconer said “We’ve been working really hard to get the project finished for this event so it was really gratifying to see the facility used by such an enthusiastic group of cyclists. The feedback has been amazing, from 6 year olds calling their experience “Awesome” to future stars getting a kick out of cycling the circuit’s distinctive corners”

The racing report ! On the track, Tim Shoreman ( Wheelbase CabTech Castelli) escaped from the bunch with British cyclo-cross champion Cameron Mason (Trinity Racing) and Lewis Martin (Studio Velo) at the 20 minute mark. The trio combined forces to build up a lead of 30 seconds, until Shoreman exploded out of the final bend and beat his escapees to the line by a bike length. Shoreman said “I wanted to lead through the final corner and go as fast as I could out of it”

During the race the men’s lap record was smashed by Sam Barbour (Ribble rechrg Race Team) and it now stands at 1.15

In the women’s race the bunch was too evenly matched to allow escapees despite Skye Davidson (Jadan Vive le Velo Glasdon) and Natalie Stevenson (Glasgow Ivy CC) repeatedly trying to gap their rivals After 45 minutes of racing it came down to a bunch sprint with 16 year old Erin Boothman firing out of the group for a convincing win. Boothman said “I really enjoyed the course, tried to bring back moves when they went and found myself in a good position on the final corner, I decided to kick, hoping no one would come round me, and they didn’t)

The women’s lap record was also broken with Natalie Stevenson recording a time of 1.26

The men’s support race was won by AlanDean (Edinburgh RC) after he broke away early on and was joined by Alastair McNicol (dooleys cycles), both riders worked together until Dean sensed he had the better of his companion and attacked with two laps to go and soloed with arms raised across the line. McNicol was second and Jake Speed (The Cycling Academy) won the bunch gallop after repeated attacks by he and his team mates.

The youth girls race followed a similar story to the support race. This time it was Melanie Rowe (Deeside Thistle CC) and Erin Boothman (East Kilbride Road Club) who attacked after 2 laps, use the course to their advantage and build an unassailable lead. Under 14 Rowe went into the final hairpin corner first and accelerated out, to nose ahead of 16 year old Boothman as they approached the finish.

Rowe said “ In the last corner I had to open a gap up because I wouldn’t beat Erin in a sprint and got it. It was really good to work together, its a great course”

The full field for the boys A and B race lead to a hectic first quarter. Struan Shaw and James Sweeney repeatedly attached into the technical corners to try and force a gap. Eventually the elastic broke and the two Edinburgh team mates went away with Evan Marsh from Johnstone Jets. Threesome combined to eventually lap the field until Shaw repeatedly attacked, dropping Marsh but getting beaten by a wheel in a frenetic sprint, with Marsh rolling in third.
