The roads are quite wide but with barriers and street furniture, that may change but its a fast course. Races will be run in an anticlockwise direction.

ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIPS – SALTBURN
On Sunday, June 25, Saltburn will host the two championship races (Women and Men) with titles for Elites and Under 23 riders to be won. My recce of the course for the Men’s and Women’s RR Championships brought back memories of the Klondike Grand Prix national series races. On a bigger course, so fewer times up Saltburn and Skelton Green than what we’ll see at the champs. First Edition of Klondike was a reduced bunch sprint (think there was a crash in the final K) won by Chris Latham but the next two, won from breakaways (Tom Pidcock and Rory Townsend).

The pics of the race on Saltburn climb are of the peloton all together and breakaways taking it in their stride. The next climb, Skelton Green, a long climb, however, seems to inspire attacks and it was awesome in 2018 & 2019. I see sprinters in the mix at the front as well!

The British Road Race Champs is on a course that will have the riders racing these climbs more than Klondike so perhaps a bunch climbing them on the early laps although I think the World Tour riders may light it up from lap 1 and force a breakaway up the road like so many times we’ve seen with team Sky.

How brutal it is will depend on how hard the two races are ridden. This will effect how many finish each of the races but one thing is for sure, a lot of the action will be at the back of the groups especially on Skelton Green climb as well off the front.

The recce of the course confirmed how short and steep Saltburn is but it does drag up to Hob Hill Lane before descending down and then when they get to Skelton Green, its long and steep in places which is why that was such a good climb to be on at the Klondike. The course drags up to Lingdale too and there are some fast, narrow, twisty and rough roads before a short kicker to Kilthorpe before its fast run to Saltburn (a little climb to Brotton too).

So the course does have some let up in it as well as all the climbing. The platform for breakaways is there but they’ll need to work well to stay clear of a chase if one gets going on the descents. There are so many WorldTour riders that it will change the way the race is ridden compared to a National A or B domestic race. For sure, there are going to be some shattered legs by the end of the races! #bringiton
