Quiz Time! Daisy Barnes (Alba Development Road Team)

Q: With the exciting news from the team for 2024, has that made your winter training faster and provided lots of motivation?
Daisy: I do feel more motivated because I know there is the potential for more opportunities and I want to be in a position where I can grab those opportunities with both hands but week in week out I try to stay focussed and tick off each session one at a time.

Q: How much training in the winter each week are you able to do?
Daisy: This varies, as I am doing a masters full time, during term time most of my time is spent on the turbo so I don’t do as many hours but then when I have time off I aim to get my longer rides in, I am always trying to balance it all!

Q: What’s been the hardest challenge for you this winter on or off the bike?
Daisy: The weather.

Q: Looking back at the 2023 season, did it go to plan or were there challenges from time to time?
Daisy: Definitely wouldn’t say it went to plan and there’s always challenges in every sport I think, even if it did go to plan.

Q: What race was the most fun to do in 2023?
Daisy: Peaks 2 day, it’s early season so I think when reflecting back it is often forgotten about but it is so fun, I love a TT on my road bike, the races are on hard courses and everyone gets stuck in.

Q: What race was the toughest on the legs and head?
Daisy: I actually can’t remember, they all felt hard!!

Q: Do you put pressure on yourself for results or just go out there to enjoy it and grab a result if it’s on offer
Daisy: I don’t think I would say I put pressure on myself, there’s a ‘want’ to do well but not a pressure that I put on myself. I just think if I’ve put the work in and done all I can in the race then that’s that.

Q: What performance (yours or a fellow rider) are you most proud of from 2023?
Daisy: Amelia Tyler at National champs, Amelia had stitches in her hand from the crash in the crit, she test rode her bike at 9pm the night before to check she could hold her handlebars enough to race and then she went and finished in the top 30 at National Champs on one of the hardest courses! Very proud teammate that day.

Q: Have you experienced UCI racing abroad and if so, what are the most exciting things to look forward to in 2024 when the team races abroad?
Daisy: I was lucky enough to experience a UCI race abroad this year and a Belgium racing block, I am excited to build on racing together as a team, obviously the higher the level of racing the more team tactics and teams work together and I think this is really exciting.

Q: Is it an ‘adventure’ traveling to races abroad with teammates?
Daisy: Always an adventure, we have such a laugh off the bike.
