Round 1 of the National Road Series for Juniors, the 10th Edition of the Junior Men’s CiCLE Classic on March 17, sees a star studded startlist of 127 riders
Startlist: 10th Junior Men’s CiCLE Classic (March 17)
This most unique and challenging race on Britain’s road racing calendar is back again in 2024 with the Junior Men’s race being the first event held on March 17, followed by the Women’s race on the same course in the afternoon.
The race starts in Melton Mowbray and heads to Owston where the riders will have a mix of rural lanes and off road ‘sectors’ testing a rider’s skills and luck during a time of the year when the weather too will play its part in the condition of the off road sectors.
The hardest of the sectors is Somerberg which is not only off road, muddy and slippery, it has a berg in it too! Having ridden a motorbike/scooter on this sector many a time, respect to the riders for staying upright at speed across this 2.2 kilometre sector done in each direction.
It isn’t just the off road sectors that are testing but the many bergs (hills) along the route which give riders a springboard for attacks. Bergs such as the ones at Cold Overton, Burrough on the Hill and Cuckooberg along with many other ‘non classified’ bergs.
The final lap of the finishing circuit is approximately 17 kms in length and riders will complete 1 and a half laps of this circuit. Owing to the construction of a by-pass around part of Melton Mowbray, the ‘Sawgate’ sector is no longer available. As a substitute to this on the final lap of the finishing circuit, riders will take in a passage of ‘Stapleford Park which is a sector of approximately 2200 metres of unmade road (flat) and the exit from this sector is less than 10 kms to the finish.
The race will be contested using a rolling road closure throughout and with a total road closure for the final eight kilometres of each of the passages of Saxby Road (B676) into Melton.
In order for the above to take place and to minimise inconvenience to other road users at the rear of the race, a ‘delay’ of more than 5 minutes behind the front of the race will trigger riders being withdrawn and passed by the Broom Wagon and rear Police car.
In this event, any competitors so affected need to be aware that they will then be riding outside the road closure arrangements and subject to normal traffic regulations.
NOTE: Pre riding of the Stapleford Estate section of the course MAY ONLY be carried out between the hours of 14.00 and 16.00 on Saturday 16th March. This is by special arrangement and MUST be adhered to
