Report/Result: Plymouth Corinthian Spring Road Race
“A Meredith Masterclass”
Charlie Meredith (Mid Devon Cycling Club) showed class is permanent with a commanding win at the Plymouth Corinthian CC Spring Road Races after several years away from the sport. Lauren Booth (05/03) out-sprinted teammate, Claire Pile (05/03) to take victory in the women’s category after working together for much of the race to stay away from the competition. Both winners earned their place on the historic Frank Spry Memorial Trophy.

Kindly supported by the Pump & Pedal Okehampton, the 65km road race took place on the picturesque Brentor Circuit, just outside of Tavistock. Forty riders from across the South West raced in near-perfect conditions on the lower slopes of western Dartmoor.
Being an ‘Open 3/4 event’, the race was open to category 3 & 4 riders within British Cycling’s ranking system. The idea being that this category of race is perfect for beginner, novice & intermediate riders. Behind Meredith (MDCC), Corey Bale (BGE) managed to escape the bunch behind in the dying moments of the race to take second. In the group sprint behind, it was Tom Scorer of Royal Navy Cycling who won the gallop to secure the final spot on the podium.
Women’s winner, Lauren Booth (05/03)
Booth & Pile took an 05/03 1-2 in the women’s category, with Kathryn Hinton (University of Exeter Cycling Club) managing to deny the Cornish racing team of a podium clean sweep in third. Mark Pierce was a deserving winner of the ‘Andrew Flynn Memorial Trophy’, awarded to the best placed Plymouth Corinthian CC member at a nominated race each year. This trophy is in memory of much loved, and missed, club member, Andrew ‘Flynny’ Flynn; who sadly lost his battle with cancer in 2017.
Cian Bryant (Bristol RC), George Watch (Mid Devon Cycling Club) & Edward Ayes (Reflex Racing) all made valiant attempts at breaking free from the peloton earlier in the race but were swallowed up soon after. Watch (Mid Devon Cycling Club) was awarded the ‘Combativity Prize’ for his efforts in animating the race.
