The 41st Jock Wadley Memorial Road Race is just over a week away on March 9 and the stacked startlist is out headed up by last years winner Jacob Vaughan!
Startlist: 41st Jock Wadley Memorial
COMING SOON! The 41st Jock Wadley Memorial Road Race is just over a week away and the stacked startlist is out!
Unlike so many classic cycle races that have disappeared from the race calendar over the years, the Jock Wadley Memorial is still with us and in 2025 is blessed with many a star name from the riders still racing this season. A decade ago Aussie Steele Von Hoff won for John Wood’s NFTO UCI team and there were many other UCI teams such as One Pro Cycling, Pedal Heaven and JLT Condor in the race. The sport however has changed since the covid times.
This year, a load of Brits have headed to France for example to get international racing but there are still many a name left here to race the big road races like the Jock Wadley. The 41st Jock Wadley Memorial Road Race will take place on Sunday 9th March on the Abberton Reservoir Circuit its used for many a year. A maximum field size of 80 riders will depart Layer de la Haye Village Hall at 11 am for 12 laps of the course (81 miles) and who knows what challenges the race will have weather wise.
The race is memory of John (Jock) Wadley (1914 –March 1981) who was an English journalist who began cycling with the promoting club Colchester Rovers cycling club when he was 14 and went on to become the club president. Wadley covered 18 Tours de France from 1956 and wrote for many cycling magazines as well as writing books and after he died in 1981, his ashes were scattered over the Col du Glandon which was on the route of the Tour de France that year. His memory is still kept in the forefront of the cycling world thanks to the Colchester Rovers keeping the race in his memory going.
This year, as well as a few talented juniors making their senior season debut in this testing race, the winner from 2024, Jacob Vaughan is set to come back and defend his title in the race. Winner of the opening road race of the 2025 season, Jordan Giles, is on the start list for the local team DAS Richardsons with the likes of Alex Peters and other strong riders directed by DS and former winner of the race, Andy Lyons.
Standout names include a race winner in 2024 Tyler Hannay and a very unlucky Rowan Baker who was second in the Wadley in 2023, and was a BIG winner in 2024! Another standout name, winner in the USA of crits and one of the leading riders in the UK, Jim Brown, part of the National Circuit Series best team, Ribble Rebellion. Other winners from 2024 include Frank Longstaff and Dom Jackson among others. A rider who was third in 2023 Timothy Torrie is on the start list as are riders like international James Jobber.
The list of contenders goes on like Thomas Springbett, a very strong second in the opening road race of the season at Portsmouth along with so many other talented riders who could be in the mix at the front of this race.
