Following the New Year announcement of the winner of the Charles Arthur Rhodes award (for having brought exceptional honour to Yorkshire in the world of cycling), on 27th February some Trustees and guests of the Charles Arthur Rhodes Board caught up with Cat Ferguson to make the formal presentation of the 2024 CA Rhodes Memorial Award to her.

Due to Cat’s very busy racing schedule and imminent departure to Spain as a Movistar professional, the presentation was a midweek affair at her father’s business premises, High Adventure Education Centre, at Cowling near Keighley. It was a friendly and informal occasion attended by four Rhodes Trustees, some former Award winners and friends. The Recorder Mike Penrice welcomed and introduced everyone, John Churchman, past President, announced Cat’s achievements and read the citation.

At only 18 years of age Cat is by far the youngest winner of the Award but has already amassed an impressive palmares and clearly has a bright future ahead of her. Trustees Chris Goode and Phil Hurt were also in attendance, as were past winners Keith Lambert (1991) and Keith & Joyce Webb (1996).

The Award was appreciated by Cat and she honoured us by proudly wearing a Rainbow Jersey and displaying her four 2024 World Champion’s gold medals, which were passed around and admired. Never has there been an opportunity to admire four such medals together, they were quite weighty. The Trustees, and indeed everyone in Yorkshire with an interest in cycling, wishes Cat well in her future professional cycling career, which many of us will be watching now with a special interest.

The C.A.Rhodes Memorial was instigated in 1961 as a tribute to the memory of Charles Arthur Rhodes (1895-1961). The Award is regarded as the greatest distinction Yorkshire Cycling can bestow.
