BRITISH CYCLOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY 1

Race winners on day 1 at the National Cyclocross Championships include Kate Eedy, Giles Drake, Nick Craig, Aisling Charlesworth and Theo Wan

NATIONAL CYCLOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY 1

REPORT (from British Cycling press release) — First national cyclo-cross champions crowned in chilly South Shields —- Eleven new national champions donned the striped jersey today, with previous winners and new faces all securing podium positions.

A 2.8km course awaited riders along the seafront in South Shields. Starting from the promenade, they’d have to tackle a mix of outdoor track, grass and sand with steep hill climbs and muddy drops throughout. Masters competing in the morning had to brave the cold and frost which added further challenges to an already technical course.

Female Masters Categories
In the female masters 40, Kate Eedy (Team Empella) was flying, taking a commanding lead early on in the race which didn’t waiver. The Lloyds National Trophy series winner took the first national champion title of the weekend, over a minute ahead of Helen Jackson (Kendal Cycle Club) in second, while Gemma Felstead (Team Empella) completed the podium positions.

Wearing her national champion jersey with pride, Eedy dedicated her win to Ceris Styler, who was injured during the last round of the Lloyds National Trophy Series, missing out today,

“We were missing Ceris today, so really, it’s a win for her as she can’t be here and we miss her. It was a really strong field, I could feel people behind me just get faster and faster. I didn’t really feel like I had it in the bag until I got over the line.”

In the female masters 50, it was a fierce battle right down to the wire between Lucy Siddle (Reifen Racing) and Helen Pattinson (Solent Pirates). Siddle and Pattinson would switch throughout the race between leading and chasing, which led to a sprint finish on the final straight. Siddle took the title by just three seconds over Pattinson, while Vickie Wilkinson (Cheltenham & County CC) completed the podium positions.

In the female masters 60, Tracey Fletcher (Shapo) put in a stunning performance securing the national champion jersey in style. In a dominant display in what was a large and competitive and competitive field, Fletcher came out on top with Nicola Davies (CXR) finishing second and Helen Winton (Vanelli-Project Go) finishing in third.

Speaking after her win on the field, Fletcher said: “I feel very pleased. For the women category, it’s the most women we’ve seen, so it’s really nice that everyone was able to get out there, compete and show that women of a certain age can still compete and ride.”

Men’s Masters Categories
In the open masters 40, Giles Drake (Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli) capped off a dominant cyclo-cross season with a national championship on top of his six wins in the National Trophy Series. Leading throughout, Drake came across the line in comfort, ahead of Adrian Lansley (Pedalon) in second and Andrew Gardiner (Sotonia CC) in third.

Speaking after his win and on a dominant year, Drake said: “I feel relieved, really happy. I thought I’d get it last year but it wasn’t to be, and I thought it was going to be Sod’s law after a good series I struggle here but it worked out well. I was trying to be a bit conservative and play things safe, when you race early there’s still frost and ice so I took my time and it worked out.”

Nick Craig (SCOTT Pioneer DJ) successfully defended his national champion jersey with an emphatic win in the open masters 50. Creating a healthy lead over the field after the first lap, Craig went from strength to strength as the race went on, finishing ahead of Ian Taylor (Shibden Cycling Club) in second by over 30 seconds, with Robert Jebb (Hope Factory Racing) finishing in third.

In the open masters 60, John McGrath (Strada Wheels RT) had a brilliant race to retain his national champion status. Grant Johnson (Unattached) finished in second place while Mick Style (Element Cycling Team) finished third.

The oldest, and biggest crowd favourite racers of the weekend, the open masters 70 gave a strong showing with six riders competing.

Dave McMullen (Cotswold Veldrijden) came home with the striped jersey, with John Galway (Scarborough Coast CC) close behind in second while Lynn Lines (Gateway Racing) completed the podium positions.

Youth Categories
The open under-16 produced one of the best races of the weekend with a fierce battle between Theo Wan (Beeston Cycling Club) and Wilfred Pugh (One Life Racing (Hexham)) as the duo battled hard throughout, neck-and-neck throughout the first lap.

Heartbreakingly, on the final lap shortly before the final pit, Pugh was hit with a mechanical, allowing Wan to break away, not looking back. Wan took home the national champion jersey, with Pugh valiantly holding onto second, while Jamies Hardisty (Clancy Briggs Cycling) finished in third.

In the female under-16, Aisling Charlesworth (Fibrax Fenwick’s Wrexham CC) had a brilliant ride. Leading from the off, she kept that lead uncontested throughout the race, able to cross the line in style. Olivia Smallshaw (Secret-Training.cc) finished in second place, while Olivia Poole (Specialized Youth DT) finished in third.

The story of the day of racing goes to Elizabeth Whall (Colchester Rovers CC), who dominated in the female under-14s. In spite of the under-14’s starting their race a minute after the under-16’s, Whall crossed the line second overall, with a quicker race than any under-16 girl. Florence Cooper (Palmer Park Velo RT) finished in second while Tillie Jennings (Clancy Briggs Cycling Academy) finished in third.

Speaking after a special day of racing, Whall said: “It feels very good, I’m very happy. It was on the radar and I knew I could do it if I tried my best after winning the series. I wasn’t too sure going into it because it was a bit slippy but it worked out very well.”

Closing out the day was the open under-14’s, which saw Tom Craker (Shibden Cycling Club) take top spot under the dimming light. Ben Clarke (Ilson Velospeed RT) finished in second place while Ewan Allaway (Pedalon)

Tomorrow will see another day of cyclo-cross action, featuring the elite open and female races, as well as the junior open and female races.
