Post race reactions (thanks to Paul Burgoine)

Geraint Thomas (Great Britain Pursuit Team)

Geraint are you disappointed with that result? “Well obviously we wanted to win – I wanted to win anyway, it’s disappointing to lose first time on the track. But saying that I think our time was good for the amount of preparation we’ve had. It’s easy to say but I’ve only stopped riding on the road in late December, at the ‘Tour Down Under’ then two weeks on the track, then came here. To be honest my own personal performance was a bit disappointing, because I felt I had a lot left at the end –that’s not really where you want to be.”

“I hit a wheel on the bend on the entrance to the home straight and ended up nearly crashing….so that’s one bonus I can take from this- keeping my bike upright. As a team though it was a good result we have a long way to go but I’m feeling confident about things.”

“I had a great year on the road last year so I’m just looking to get that strength back, so a couple more road races and I think I can get a few seconds quicker, then get back out there for some revenge, and beat them in their own back yard. We can’t have any impact on what the Australians are doing, but as long as we keep improving ourselves.”

“We have got Ed Clancy he is the best man one in the world and Steven Burke who had two weeks off the bike with shingles but we didn’t go around saying that trying to make excuses, we got beaten fair and square on the day but for sure we got a long way to go, but once we reach that peak fitness we can gel the ride together, and hold it for the last two kilometres which we didn’t do very well tonight”.

Did you expect the Australians to go quick and maybe take the World Record? “Yes we did think they might challenge the World Record, the way they have been riding in the past few years; they’ve been tremendous, improving all the time I’ve got nothing but admiration for them. It’s going to be a great Olympic final, like I said what they do we can’t control, and we just need to look after ourselves and have confidence, me and Ed have done it before in Beijing so that helps”.

Where do you go from here? “I’ve got a road block now then, Paris-Nice after that it’s back to the track to do all the specific stuff, that’s what I have been lacking. The cadence on the track is just so different to the road and that’s what got the better of me tonight towards the end of the race, being able to pedal at 130, RPM and 600Watts for four minutes.”

“The last Kilo is what was missing so hopefully by Melbourne it will be down to the last 500M and by the time of the games we will have it all, hopefully….”

It’s great to have this rivalry and they have been hunting us since Beijing, and for sure at the moment they have got the upper hand. But that’s only going to make us hungry like I said me and Ed have been there and done it and I’m sure we can do it again”
When are you off the road for good?”

“The Giro d’Italia then possibly a road race after that, I won’t be doing any classic because they clash with Melbourne, I’m all for the track now I just need to commit 100% to it, so I’ve got no excuses come London and the Olympics”

Australian Men’s Pursuit Team

Michael Hepburn – Was that exactly what you were after? “Our number one target was to win the race and familiarise ourselves with the track, and we’ve done that. We wasn’t even thinking about our time today, but when we knew we were, and we just kept it going till the finish”
It looked very smooth and you finished with all four riders together?

“Yeah that’s a real positive sign finishing with the four of us, Alex Edmondson rode a great race he is only 18 and responding to the team in which we have three World champions he has done a great job”

How valuable will this experience be, come August? “Yes we got a real feel for it and with the crowd it’s more like a World Championships not a World cup, what with the support for the Brits, hopefully come the Games we will have some Australian support here”

Jack Durbridge – How do you feel that went Jack? “Obviously we came here for the win that was number one so we done that, I think to come over here and get that result with all the travelling involved the boys have done well. It’s the best time we have ever done and it’s a massive stepping stone for the team. We are still 5/6 weeks off the Worlds so to do that already it’s a good sign”.

Having seen the women set world Records, did you feel it was possible today? “ Yes we knew the track was quick, so to be able to post our quickest time was awesome this is not just down to the four guys on the track but all the backroom staff too it’s a massive team effort”

Was there a time when you felt you had the measure of the British Team? “No never, we never let down our guard or give an inch, they are a world class team and Olympic Champions and World Record holders, and we wouldn’t give them an inch we race from start to finish, there is not one minute when we slacken off”

The British Team had a bit of an early lead, but you managed to keep your composure. “We’re normally pretty quick starters but Ed Clancy has a very fast and brilliant start. So with us being a bit slower we knew we would be down for the first few laps, but we kept calm and relaxed and we were able to bring it home at the end”.

Do you think you can go quicker? “Defiantly this track is only going to get faster leading up to the games. This weekend has been an awesome stepping stone for Australia, we have been getting quicker and we are proving our class ever time we get on the boards. It’s been a remarkable ride by young Alex still only 18 years old”

Laura Trott (Great Britain) Omnium

Do you think you can do the pursuit and the Omnium in the Games? “I should think so, obviously I’ve got some work to do but I’ve got five months to do it in”.

How hard was it to race the Omnium so soon after the Pursuit? “I felt terrible in the points qualification and nearly didn’t qualify to be honest it was only the crowd that got me through it, so yes it was pretty tough”

It was a very gutsy ride in the elimination race coming from the back on many occasions – “That race was so hard everyone always says ride second wheel and I was trying to do that. But you get a wave of people coming over you every lap and I just couldn’t fight, so I thought why don’t I just ride it like a team pursuit all I have to do is a quick half lap and get back on. I haven’t seen the race yet but people keep telling me about it I got 1500 more followers on Twitter last night because of it so I couldn’t have been that bad”

You have matched the big two of Sarah Hammer (USA) and Tara Whitten (Canada) do you think you can go on to beat them?
“I believe I can but obviously I just do this for team pursuit training, I dont do any training at all for this, so if I did train for it yes I do believe I can beat them”

How are you coping with all the attention?
“I love it and I must say a massive thanks to all my supporters , I have my first coach watching me today so it’s nice to win a medal in front of them, so just a huge thanks to everyone who follows me”
