The Velo29 Winter Series was established in 2011 as the North’s only racing in the months of January and February.

Since its conception the series has grown each year with riders travelling from as far as Cambridge and the boarders to enjoy the facilities at Croft.
There are two races each week, the first from 11:00am is for 4th Category and Go-Race riders.
It’s a 8 lap 16.8 mile race lasting usually around 45 minutes. Though the racing is competitive it’s a great place to “cut your teeth†in the competitive side of cycling. We have lots of riders who have ridden our Sportives or are brand new to cycling and want to have a go at racing or riders coming from other sports such as triathlon and running. Typically 60 – 80 riders take part, all riders set off together.
The 2nd race is for E/1/2/3/4/J/ W riders, this means that 4th cat riders can ride both events for 1 entry fee!
Starting at 12:15 it’s a different format with riders setting off in category groups at approximately 1 minute intervals, known as handicap racing. The race is 15 laps (31.5 miles) usually lasting around 80 minutes, depending on the wind speed. Around 60 – 80 riders take part in this event.
There are 3 races in this year’s Winter Series, we have series points for teams and individuals, lots of you enter large teams which is great.
The series breaks on the 22nd Feb for the North East Trophy. It’s not part of the series as the race takes on a different format. We have Youth racing from 10:30 then at 12:00 we have a 30 lap handicap race for E/1/2/3/4/J/W riders.
The event is billed as the season opener and we attract some of the biggest names in the business to come to Croft and take on the local riders. Less experienced riders shouldn’t be afraid, it’s a great chance to ride against the big names on a safe familiar circuit and enjoy much of the infrastructure we bring to our Premier Calendar Events.
