News – Another course record for Bottrill
On Saturday afternoon, 70 riders gathered in the small town Calverton, in Nottinghamshire to take part in the Mapperly CC 10 mile time trial.
It was an ideal day for racing with not much wind and warm temperatures. The race is held on rolling roads with a really hard finish to the town of Calverton.
The race started at 3pm and with ideal conditions, the result board was filling up with some really good times. It was Adam Gascoigne- Pedal Power who was the first rider inside 21 minutes with 20:37 and this was soon battered down by James Perkins – Team Zenith GC Cycling with a time of 20:31.
With most of the riders home by 4pm, it was the turn of Matthew Bottrill of drag2zero.com to take the start. Already owning the record of 19:49. Bottrill, had this in his sights and leaving the start, which was down the hill, the speed was soon up to 40mph.
He was cruising his way to the first turn but it was not going to be an easy win as Ryan Perry – Langdale Lightweights has been showing some very rapid times on the course and was out to also take on the record.
Leaving just one minute after Bottrill, Perry was also flying and at the half way point, the pair could be not split time wise. There were loads of spectators from the promoting Mapperly CC out watching to see if Bottrill could be beaten but over the final stages of the time trial, and on the hardest point of the circuit Bottrill, really opened up the taps.
He stopped the clock in a new course record time of 19:26 and Perry was not far behind with 19:40 also breaking the previous record of Bottrill’s.
After the finish, Matt explained how the race went. “Good to be honest. I knew something was going off when the time keeper said – make sure you try today? Then when I saw so many people out, I thought this Perry guy must be pretty rapid and it turns out he was!”
“I came here after a big weeks training and even today I rode the course three times to get a really solid workout. To be honest, I’m having to train harder than ever to keep in front of everybody. I know I’m the target that everyone wants to beat which is bringing the best out in others but its also pushing me harder”.
“It makes training full on all the time and I know if I want to stay at the top, I can’t back off but I have no plans of doing that just yet”!
