Report/Result: Curlew Cup
Julie Erskine delivered a near-perfect race finish to take victory at the Curlew Cup in the National Women’s Road Series in Northumberland.
The Cycle Team OnForm rider launched herself into the final break, keeping up with a lead group of five right the way through to a gripping final sprint into Stamfordham in Northumberland. Hannah Payton took second place for Drops Cycling, while Bianchi Dama UK were represented on the podium by Georgina Panchaud. National Women’s Road Series leader Chanel Mason finished fourth.

The women had to complete three laps of the 22 mile circuit which included the feared Ruyals stepped climb and first time up the race exploded into small groups and whilst some managed to get back to the front, the peloton was a much small group on that second lap.
The first major attack to get a gap was from Jennifer George who was recovered from a knee injury she got in the Tour Series and that led to the first assault for Storey Racing, heading towards the halfway stage of the race. Reinforcements were to arrive but it wasn’t too last for George, hauled back into the peloton before really getting a chance to hit her stride.
That didn’t deter others from giving it a go themselves, as Annasley Park, Melissa Lowther and Beth Crumpton chanced their arms in a three-strong lead group, taking their advantage to beyond 21 seconds. And when Katie Archibald, CiCLE Classic winner, and Laura Massey joined in the fun, it seemed as though this quintet could have a major say over the victor in Northumberland.
But with their advantage always minimal, the lead was not to last into the third and final lap, as the last 35km assault with all the riders locked together to set up a thrilling finale.
First time up the Ryals
Series leader Mason took the plunge with Payton, Panchaud and Erskine providing more than able assistance to the four-pronged attack with a fifth rider Emily Nelson closing in from behind. Panchaud was the first to play her hand, breaking into a small but mighty lead up the Ryals.
The lone lead by Panchaud was closed down and it fell to Erskine to secure a brilliant victory, crossing the line to a wonderful reception in Stamfordham. Archibald, who was sixth took both Queen of the Mountain and Sprints classifications in the race.
