Another of the British riders who made it into a break was Connor Swift of Madison Genesis – we chatted about stage 1

Tour of Britain Chat: Connor Swift (Madison Genesis)
With three wins to his name in 2017, Connor Swift, nickname ‘twofast’- has had a good year and on a grippy stage 1 of the Tour of Britain, he made the breakaway for his team, Madison Genesis.
“It was pretty rapid as you would expect it to be” Connor explained the day after his big day out. “There were quite a lot of moves going and then we got to the 20k mark and you could notice the bigger teams trying to block the road a bit and at that point you know you need to be up the road a bit. So I got up the road and there were eight of us and I’d made the break”.
With good performances in Europe and a victory in Leicester in August, Connor has good form and is happy with how he is riding. Asked does he feel racing in an event like the Tour of Britain is a level up from what they do most of the season, Connor replied “I’d say so. You have the conti teams in the UK and those riders are the strongest in the racing here and then you go to these races in Europe and everyone is on a conti team or higher and at the same level or even better and that’s makes for better racing.”
“This is the biggest race of the season for me, right up there with the Tour of Yorkshire, and there are some big names in the race this week. During the first bit yesterday, I was looking around me and I saw Cav one side, Philippe Gilbert next, Tony Martin, and it’s like you have to pinch yourself a bit”.
Chatting about objectives, he says “it’s going to be tough to do a ride for GC because of the sprinters teams and the time trial so our objective is to get in a move and go for a jersey. So I went for KoM points yesterday (stage 1) but the break came back before the last two so I was a bit gutted for about that”.
“It was real tough in the break too. We had a head wind all day and while we had some wheels to hide in, there were some guys in the break whipping through and they made it tough for us.”
