Q & A: Hayley Jones (Team WNT)
Asked about her team, WNT Pro Cycling, Hayley says “the best thing about being a part of the team is that we get to do a mix of races both domestically and internationally. I haven’t met all the girls yet so hopefully it will be a really fun year together”.
1. How did you get into cycle racing?
Hayley: My parents (Louise and Phil) raced, my brother started and I wanted to have a go also.
2. What’s your favourite discipline in cycling?
Hayley: Crits and road, sometimes a TT.
3. What is the best thing about bike racing?
Hayley: The adrenaline rush I get!
4. What was the highlight of 2016 for you and why?
Hayley: Getting to go to race and train in some amazing places. I fell in love with Italy and had the best week out there racing and training, probably because I had some good climbing form and there were a lot of climbs.
5. What was your favourite/most fun race of 2016
Hayley: Ride London. I loved the course and it was such a quality field.
6. What was the toughest race of 2016 for you and why?
Hayley: European road champs, that climb every lap just got too much.
7. If there was one thing you learned most in 2016 to help you go faster/better, what was that?
Hayley: That going to the gym helps build strength and played a big difference in my 2016 performances.
8. What is the best piece of equipment (clothing/bike/gadget) to do with racing you are proud of most?
Hayley: The Specalized S-Works Tarmac we are riding for 2017, I have ridden them in the past and absolutely love them.
… continued after advert
9. What is your warm up routine for races – rollers or turbo? Music or no music?
Hayley: Depends on the race, if it’s short and sharp, crit or TT, rollers and music, I couldn’t deal with my own thoughts for 25 minutes.
10. Where will you train during the winter?
Hayley: I have been in Australia for the winter, and plan on it for as long as I ride, I don’t do the cold if I don’t have to!
11. When will you start training for 2017 and what comes first – long steady miles or a mix of miles and efforts?
Hayley: It’s January so I have already done my first race of the year women’s Tour Down Under. It was steady miles but being in Brisbane, there are weekly crits to keep some intensity in.
12. What are the goals for 2017?
Hayley: I am still working that out. In 2016 I struggled at the back end of the season so want to push right through to the end of this season on good form.
13. Does winter training consist only of riding the bike or running/swimming/gym work (cross training)
Hayley: Some gym has been in there, I went for two runs and one swim and decided neither were for me.
14. Finally, what have you learnt over the years to best deal with the British winter months on a bike!
Hayley: Avoid the winter months and go to my parents in Australia … also as it will be cold in February when I get to the UK, it’s better to be too warm than too cold, layer up.
