TEAM NEWS: ARCHIBALD AND RICHARDSON JOIN SUPERSTARS REPRESENTING GREAT BRITAIN AT 2025 UCI TRACK WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Six defending world champions will lead the 22-strong squad selected to represent the Great Britain Cycling Team at the 2025 UCI Track World Championships in Santiago, Chile from Wednesday 22nd to Sunday 26th October.
Having taken their second consecutive team pursuit title last year, Katie Archibald, Meg Barker, Josie Knight, Anna Morris and Jess Roberts will again be taking to the boards of Santiago. After narrowly missing out on the women’s omnium European title earlier this year, Maddie Leech will join the squad who will be aiming to keep Great Britain on the team pursuit top spot for the third year in a row. They will all be competing in individual events, with all eyes on what Anna Morris will achieve in the individual pursuit, having set two world records already this year.
The men’s endurance squad will include team pursuit Olympic silver medallist Charlie Tanfield, Michael Gill and Will Tidball who both won European bronze medals earlier this year in the individual pursuit and scratch respectively, as well as being part of the silver-medal-winning men’s team pursuit.
Madison specialist Mark Stewart will be joined by Josh Tarling who while well-established on the road, will be making his elite track world championships debut.
Having taken the silver medal after setting an individual pursuit world record in his debut world championships last year, before picking up the European title in the event in February, Josh Charlton will be looking to add more silverware to his collection. He will be joined by Matt Bostock, who having built a successful career on the road in recent years will make his return to the track as part of the team pursuit line up.
Matt Richardson will make his hotly anticipated world championships debut representing Great Britain. Having recently become the first sprinter ever to break the nine second barrier for the flying 200m start, setting a world record twice with an eventual time of 8.857 seconds, Richardson is ready to show what he can do on the world stage as part of GBCT.
Richardson will be joined by Olympic silver medallist Hamish Turnbull, Harry Ledingham-Horn and Joe Truman for the men’s sprint programme.
Two-time sprint world champion Emma Finucane will lead the women’s sprint squad as she looks to make it a hattrick of rainbows. As the women’s sprint squad goes from strength to strength, she will be joined by two-time world medallist Lauren Bell and three debutants; Rhian Edmunds, Iona Moir and Rhianna Parris-Smith.
The trio showed their potential at their first elite European championships earlier this year, with Edmunds in particular bagging three silver medals, and will be looking to translate this success over to world championships level.
Performance Director for the Great Britian Cycling Team, Stephen Park CBE said: “As we often see at this stage in an Olympic cycle, we have a great mix of world championship veterans and up and coming talent heading to Santiago. Many of our eight debutants competed at elite European level this year and came back with some brilliant results, so it will be interesting to see how they settle into established squads and show what they’ve got to give on the world stage. Within our more established riders we have four title defences taking place, including back-to-back successes in the women’s team pursuit and women’s sprint from Emma Finucane. With the cycle now fully underway and our performance planning strategies live within the squads, I’m looking forward to seeing where we sit among the other nations as all eyes turn to LA 2028.”
