What a difference a week makes, last week too much wind and rain, this week sunshine in abundance for a good turn out for the second week of criteriums. It was lovely to see new faces amongst the riders from various clubs, the word is definitely getting around for a superb circuit and safe environment to race.

The ladies race was the first to take place over 40 minutes plus a lap where seven keen and eager ladies took to the start line.  They set off at a rapid pace and it wasn’t long before we had two distinct groups forms of four leaders including Sam Borman new to racing this year and Iona Sewell an experienced criterium racer, just back after competing at Otley and Stockton.

The ladies worked well together with no one being able to break away and so it was to come down to a bunch sprint with Sam Borman taking the sprint from Iona Sewell, Olivia Tomlinson and Annabel Sill.

The men quickly got onto the circuit and 28 riders starting racing in the heat at York, the race set off at a blistering pace led by newcomers Will Staveley – Dirtwheels RT and Simon West – Cycle sense, who has settled in quite nicely to the new venue.

These were quickly pursued by Nathan Wilson, Wilson’s wheels and Paul Caswell Harrogate Nova.by lap ten a nice group of three had a ten second gap on the main field consisting of West, Staveley and Caswell they continued to work together and on lap thirteen they were joined by the inform sprinter Pete Barecevicus  from Dirtwheels RT.

These riders had strength, power and endurance and eventually powered away from the main field, despite various efforts from Nathan Wilson and a few others they couldn’t bridge the gap.

Pete showing his sprinting skills took the sprint from comeback rider Paul Caswell with Simon West holding onto a well deserved third from Junior Will Staveley. The bunch was led in by Richard Baldwin Bike box from Nathan Wilson.

Great to see so many riders having fun out there in the Summer evenings sunshine.

Next race Tuesday 16th July for ladies and 2/3/4 men.
