Adam Yates is third on the final stage and second overall whilst his brother Simon is 10th on stage and overall in the 50th edition of the Tour de l’Avenir (France)

The final stage of the Tour de l’Avenir was held in eastern France today (Saturday) and despite an attacking ride by Adam Yates, the British rider was unable to take back the minute he needed to take the yellow jersey and so he finished the race in second overall and third on stage. His brother Simon, winner of two stages, was 10th on stage and moved up to 10th overall.
L-R: Simon and Adam Yates. World Tour for them in 2014… they bloody well deserve it.
The riders faced a course over 135 km with three mountain passes, including Glières Plateau where the finish line was drawn. It was perfect terrain for climbers and the French rider Julian Alaphilippe racing for a feeder team for Quickstep, won after attacking in the final. Overall, the race was won by Spaniard Ruben Fernandez who only needed to control Yates and his other rivals which he did to a large extent.
From the outset, the Slovenian Mark Dazmastagic rode away but the peloton brought him back before five other riders countered; Dieter Bouvry (Belgium), Tim Mikelj (Slovenia), Caleb Ewan (Australia), Victor Manokov (Russia) and Daniel Gregory (USA).
The front five at the top of the first climb had 40 seconds on the peloton that was already losing riders. When they arrived at the foot of the last climb of the day, the French were on the move. Julian Alaphilippe and Alexis Gougeard (France) attacked out of the peloton along with the Slovenian Matej Mohoric.
They easily bridged to the leading trio of Bouvry, Ewan and Daniel while sprinter Ewan (Australia) could not hold their pace. The four out front had 2’35 “ahead on the peloton at one stage but only Julian Alaphilippe could hold off the chasers behind where the fight for the GC was raging.
Yates threw everything at getting the yellow, catching all but Alaphilippe and Mohoric to finish third. He took time out of the yellow jersey but not enough and finished second overall. It was an historic race though with both Yates brothers really making a name for themselves in the mountains, something not seen for a generation or more by young British riders in these development races such as the Avenier.
