News: Riders Gear up for Yorkshire Grand Départ

Some of world cycling’s leading young names are gearing up to ride the Grand Départ in Yorkshire ahead of the full 2014 Tour de France route announcement in Paris.

As excitement builds ahead of the full route reveal the cycling community are starting to turn their attention to Yorkshire’s Grand Départ and the reception they will receive when the world’s greatest cycle race starts in the county on the weekend of the 5th and the 6th July.

Sky Procycling’s Richie Porte, winner of the best young rider in the Giro d’Italia 2010 and winner of Paris-Nice 2013 said of the Grand Depart 2014: “It looks like a very beautiful start in Yorkshire. It’s what we like as riders, to race through beautiful landscapes in the world’s greatest race.”

Saxo Bank’s Nicholas Roche, 5th in the 2013 Vuelta a Espana, added: “I’m really looking forward to racing in Yorkshire for next year’s Grand Départ. I saw at the Olympics how great the crowds were so it should be spectacular!”

Peter Kennaugh another Sky Procycling rider added: “I’ve raced in the UK throughout my career and the support for cycling has got bigger and bigger each year but Yorkshire’s Grand Départ is going to take it to a whole new level, I can’t wait.”

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, added: “We are looking forward to welcoming the champions of cycling to our glorious county for two stunning days of world class racing. Millions of people will line the routes of the stages providing a fitting start to the Tour de France and a reception the riders are unlikely to forget as they race their way to Paris.”

The first stage races from Leeds to Harrogate via the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the second stage races from York to Sheffield via Pennine Yorkshire. More details about the Grand Départ are available online at www.letouryorkshire.com, a third stage takes place on the 7th July racing from Cambridge to London.
