Criterium International – Dumoulin wins stage 2
ASO Press Release
After Nacer Bouhanni sprinted to stage 1 success this morning, it was Tom Dumoulin’s turn to set things right on the individual time-trial of the Criterium International.
On the 7-kilometre course around Porto Vecchio, the Dutchman claimed his very first professional victory, beating Australia’s Rohan Dennis and Luxemburg’s Bob Jungels. The 23-year-old from Giant-Shimano captures the overall lead of the event with one stage to go.

Often well placed, like on the Dutch road championships or the Eneco Tour last year, Tom Dumoulin was still looking for his first pro win. The promising rider from Giant-Shimano finally conquered that expectation. Clocking an impressive time of 9’07 (better than Froome last year, 9’10), the 23-year-old Dutchman flew to the top of the rankings early on. He then had to wait for the 52 remaining riders to cover the 7-kilometre course.
His most dangerous rival eventually was Australian Rohan Dennis (GRS), also 23 years of age, who finished just 3’’ adrift. This second stage of the event was indeed one for young men. Indeed Bob Jungels (TFR), two years younger than his main rivals captured a fine third spot, 10†off the best time. Among the pre-race favourites, Frenchman Jean-Christophe Peraud (ALM) enjoyed a fine 4th spot, at 11’’.
On the eve of the decisive stage of the race heading to the Col de l’Ospedale, Tom Dumoulin leads the way overall with a 3’’ advantage over Dennis and 8’’ over Jungels.
There’s still a lot at stake for the rider from Limburg who admits being a fairly good climber. Indeed the first 20 riders of the GC are all within under 30â€. Added to the Yellow Jersey he’ll be wearing, Dumoulin also leads the points and best young rider standings. Theo Vimpère (BIG) will be enjoying the best climber’s jersey on his shoulders.
“Finally, after lots of close calls and second places it’s great to get a win” Tom said afterwards. “I went full gas from the off and did a good ride, nailed all the corners and had good power on the fast sections. Once again the Giant Trinity TT bike felt so smooth and fast and mentally that’s a huge boost when you’re hurting.
“It’s great to win here in Corsica again after our Tour success here last year. It seems that we have a good connection with yellow jersey’s in Corsica. Tomorrow is going to be hard for sure but I am in good shape and feel strong so I will give it my all on the climbs with the guys and see how we finish.â€
Third placed Bob Jungels said on his team’s website “For sure I am happy. I felt good this morning in the stage and I knew last year I was good here too – I did 7th,†exclaimed Jungels after the time trial. “It was different conditions this year with the wind, and I was a minute faster than last year. I did 475 watts average over nine minutes so that’s pretty good, and I am really satisfied with that. With Fränk [Schleck] tomorrow we have a good contender for tomorrow, so let’s hope for another good result tomorrow.â€
